A few STEM Updates:
Boone Meadow students kicked off the year with a life science focus from kindergarten through fourth grade. Our classroom teachers facilitated many hands-on, engaging lessons both indoors and outdoors. Our vegetable garden (tended all summer by our family garden team) was a great place for seeing the life science first-hand and learning more about where our food comes from. Thank you to those families who volunteered this summer under the direction of Candice Culligan. This fall, in R.A.C.E. Day STEM, students harvested carrots, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers and got to taste the vegetables right off the vines!
In September and October, all first through fourth grade students had their first two coding lessons of the year. Each grade level is enrolled in a coding course through the Code.org website and is learning block based coding through that platform and classroom lessons with me. First quarter was 4th grade’s turn for STEM Related Arts rotation. Students learned about energy transfer and transformation as they designed their own solar cars to simulate solving a real-world problem. This quarter 3rd grade students are doing coding autonomous Lego NXT robots with Mrs. Benson during their STEM Related Arts Rotation.
From the ART Room
Our young 1st -4th artists have begun a new unit of study, color. To kick off the unit we are working in teams this week to complete the challenge of creating a ‘walking color wheel’. All groups were given the same materials and provided with clues along the way. Great teamwork is happening!!
Our young Kindergarten artists began by reading the book, “Mouse Paint.” We followed that up with discussing the proper layout of a basic color wheel, learned about complimentary colors and are ready to begin painting our ‘mouse paint’ color wheels next week.

Veterans Day Program:
- Thank you to all of our families and veterans for attending this year’s Veterans Day Program! Congratulation to all our students on a job very well done!
This year’s first and second grade music programs will give the opportunity for parents, grandparents and guardians to participate in the learning by partnering up with their kids for our first ever Family Folk Dance Night! That’s right, Mr. Doublestein and his students will teach you how to dance several fun but easy folk dances and make a memory you won’t soon forget.
Second grade will perform on Tuesday evening December 3rd, and first grade will perform on Wednesday evening December 4th. Due to the number of students, each grade will be split into two groups.
- On December 3rd, Lamaster/Kiel and Megli/Kiel will perform from 5:30-6:30pm, and Proctor/Kiel and Graham/Kiel will perform from 6:45-7:45pm.
- On December 4th, Welch/Neal and Mattingly/Neal will perform from 5:30-6:30pm, and Foley/Neal and Bender/Neal will perform from 6:45-7:45pm.
- Miss Kiel and Mrs. Neal’s classes will split according to their regular specials rotation, joining whichever class they daily join for related arts.
- Families with multiple siblings in the same grade level only are welcome to combine into a single group and attend whichever time slot works best for their family. All other students should attend with their class.
- Please email Mr. Doublestein at wdoublestein@zcs.k12.in.us if a scheduling conflict requires that you join the other group, approvals will be granted as space allows.
Donors Choose - Xylophones
Mr. Doublestein is raising money through Donors Choose to update the final eight old and out of tune xylophones in his classroom. Volunteers and Visitor Background Checks
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS
We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.
Examples include:
- Field Trip Chaperones
- Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
- Tutors
- Volunteer Coaches
- Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
- Library Helpers
- After Prom Workers
- Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
- Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales
During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years. The link to apply for the full background check can be accessed on the Volunteers/BRAVO link on the ZCS main webpage. For more information, contact the Volunteer/BRAVO Coordinator.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.
Examples Include:
- Lunch Guests
- Classroom Guest Speakers
- Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
- Parent/Teacher Conferences
We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.
*ZCS thanks all volunteers for generous support of our youth and schools. Thank you, too, for supporting assurance of student and staff safety by completing and paying for a volunteer background check.
