The Leader In Me - The 7 Habits of Happy Kids
HABIT 7 - Sharpen the Saw
Sharpen the Saw means to have balance in your life. There is a story of a man who was sawing down a tree and did not make a lot of progress. When a passerby asked him why he didn't stop sawing to sharpen his saw, he remarked that he was too busy sawing. Habit 7 reminds us that we are more productive when we are in balance - body, brain, heart, and soul. Just like the four tires of a car, if one area is being ignored or overused, the rest will feel the results. It is important that the four parts of a person (body, brain, heart, soul) be taken care of so all of them work better and work together.
At Home Ideas
Develop a Sharpen the Saw activity center in your home. Include arts and crafts supplies, learning games, puzzles, music, books, etc.
Discuss various ways to Sharpen the Saw in all areas. Ideas might include: body (playing outside, riding a bike), brain (balancing reading with TV and video games), heart (making a list of what makes you happy and doing something on that list everyday, spending time with family and friends), and soul (attending a religious service, volunteering in your community, starting a journal).

Level Up With School Lunch!

Health Tips From Nurse Anna!
Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to help prevent the spread of germs. It’s never a bad time to teach (or reteach!) kids proper handwashing procedures. Here are 5 simple steps to make handwashing easy and fun to remember:
WET your hands with water.
LATHER your hands with soap.
SCRUB your hands for 20 seconds. Singing Happy Birthday twice, The ABC song and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star are all songs that can be sung while scrubbing. Remember the back of hands, between fingers and under fingernails. Germs are good at hiding!
RINSE your hands under running water.
DRY your hands with a clean towel.
Be a good role model. Kids look to the adults around them to set the standard. By washing your hands frequently throughout the day with the proper technique, sets a powerful example and shows that you think the habit is important.
Remind them often to wash their hands. It’s easy to remember when you see the dirt on your hands, but germs are invisible to the naked eye. Prompt them throughout the day to wash their hands especially before eating, after using the restroom and after blowing their nose.
Good hand hygiene will help combat the common illnesses that we see in the fall/winter months. Currently we are seeing the common cold, a stomach virus, pink eye and fall allergies.
Thank you for all that you do to keep our students safe and healthy.
Enjoy the beautiful fall weather,
Anna Robinette, RN
