Meet the New Westridge Principal
Laura Weaver will be the new principal at Westridge Elementary. Laura has served as the Student Support Specialist at Westridge where she has been an indispensable partner in supporting the school community, as well as the broader SSS team.
Prior to joining LOSD, Laura was an elementary teacher in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District and in schools in San Diego. Laura earned her Administrative License from Lewis & Clark College, her Master of Education from High Tech High Graduate School of Education in San Diego, and her Bachelor of Arts in Diversified Liberal Arts from the University of San Diego.
Laura is replacing Jules Laaperi as principal of Westridge; Jules has accepted a position with West Linn-Wilsonville School District. Thank you Jules for her time and talent, and welcome Laura to the principal position at Westridge.

Outpouring of Love, Support for Lopez Family
During this school year, the LOJ community partnered with the Oregon-based nonprofit Sparrow Clubs USA on a Sparrow Project to help a very special girl. Five-year-old Ava, who is diagnosed with an Astrocytoma brain tumor, is more than special to the LOJ community because she is the daughter of staff member and PE teacher Luke Lopez.
In partnering with Sparrow Clubs, students had the opportunity to love and support Ava through simple acts of community service. They also showed Ava’s family love and support through cards, letters, and connecting with them through the Sparrow Clubs USA iPhone App. Last Friday, Sparrow Clubs hosted an assembly where Luke expressed his family's gratitude for the LOJ community.
The Sparrow Clubs’ mission is to empower kids to help kids in medical need by inspiring young people to make a difference in the lives of others through acts of community service.
Set Up Meal Accounts for 2022-23 School Year
It has been a pleasure serving all of our students' meals this school year. Our universal free meals waiver with USDA expires on June 30, 2022. That means starting in August 2022, LOSD will be serving meals under the free/reduced/paid categories. Additional information on how to set up a school meal account and free/reduced meal applications can be found on under Nutrition Services on the district website.
First Days of 2022-23 School Year
Aug. 29: first day for students in grades 1-5, 6 and 9.
Sept. 1: first day for all kindergarteners
Aug. 29-31 is kindergarten orientation. Kindergartners will be invited to an orientation at their new schools one of those three days. Parents/guardians can expect an invitation from their principal by the week of Aug. 22 regarding their student's orientation day.
Save the Date: Smart Start 2022
Smart Start is an opportunity specifically for our students with 504s and IEPs, and their parents and guardians, to make introductions, connect with their teachers, and feel prepared and welcomed for the start of school. For the 2022-23 School Year, Smart Start will be held in-person at each LOSD school, Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022, 1-3 p.m. More information about Smart Start is available on the district website.

Returning Unused COVID-19 Screening Supplies
If your student participated in the OHSU COVID-19 weekly screening program, we can return your unused, unopened collection kits. Please feel free to drop them off in a collection bin located in the reception area of the LOSD Administration Building, 2455 Country Club Road, Lake Oswego (single-story building on Lake Oswego High School campus next to the district pool). The reception area will be open this June and July, Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., except June 20 and July 4. Returning your supplies is optional.

The LOSD COVID-19 Dashboard has been updated for the last week of this school year. The dashboard shows the number of staff and students who have reported to LOSD testing positive for COVID-19, regardless of school exposure.
You're Invited: Amateur Radio Field Day
All are invited to the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and Lake Oswego Amateur Radio Emergency Service (LO ARES) annual Field Day.

In this annual nationwide event, amateur radio operators (hams) join more than 40,000 of their colleagues throughout North America to test their skills and introduce emergency communications to the public. Field Day encourages hams to operate outdoors, contacting their counterparts across the country while using temporary antennas and alternate sources of power, such as portable generators, batteries or solar panels.
Lake Oswego ARES backs up the LO Fire Department’s communication system when called upon. During an earthquake, ice storm, or other disaster, it’s likely that electrical power, cellular service and normal communications may fail or become severely overloaded. “When all else fails,” LO ARES will be there to help.
Come and meet the amateur radio operators of the Lake Oswego ARES team, and learn about the many ways they are trained to assist Lake Oswego in the event of emergency. If you’re curious about amateur radio, interested in becoming a licensed amateur radio operator, or want to become a member of Lake Oswego ARES, this event will serve as a great introduction to the hobby.

Hunger Fighters Moved, Needs Bags
Hunger Fighters new location is in Mountain Park at 4 Monroe Parkway, Suite A in Lake Oswego.
Shop-In Pantry Hours:
- Sunday 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
- Wednesday 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
- Friday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
As Hunger Fighters is now open for clients to come in and shop for themselves, they have the need for reusable bags to have on hand. Reusable bags may be dropped off in the donation box outside of Hunger Fighters any day it is open.
LO Library Summer Reading Program
The Summer Library Challenge “Read Beyond the Beaten Path” is the Lake Oswego Public Library’s 2022 summer reading, learning and exploration program for ALL ages and abilities. It will take place beginning June 1 and ending August 31. Sign up online at lopl.org/summer to track your summer reading, complete outdoor challenges and enter your scavenger hunt finds.

Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
