What's Happening in English/Language Arts
6th Grade- To demonstrate their understanding of direct and indirect characterization, 6th grade students are writing short skits in which two medieval characters from The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander are placed in interesting situations at Pioneer Middle School.
7th Grade- Seventh graders in ELA are welcoming in this festive time of year with some amazing descriptive writing lessons. Using Sandra Cisneros as inspiration they are including figurative language in their writings and taking a stab at analyzing symbolism in vignettes, poetry, and short stories. We are learning through doing as we create ugly sweaters for literary characters and illustrating dwelling places as well from Mango Street.
8th Grade- In Mr. Milton's 8th Grade English, we are studying winter holidays, and asking why societies have holidays in the first place. The work includes articles and story reading, and skit performances. Students in Mrs. Marrero's ELA classes concluded their unit on argumentative essay writing. Students learned how to formulate strong thesis statements and how to develop and utilize outlines to keep their essays on track. These foundational skills will be helpful as they progress into other genres of essay writing.
