Matanzas High School Weekly Update
November 3, 2023
Let's Be On Time Pirates!
You may have heard that we are increasing our enforcement of tardies at MHS. We know that our halls have crowded areas and there are some long distances to walk on campus, but our expectation is that students walk with a purpose and make the effort to get to class on time. Due to the construction, we are allowing all students an additional 1 minute 'grace period' after the bell rings to get to class before they will be marked tardy. We are so appreciative of the majority of MHS students who are making good choices and holding themselves accountable to get to class on time and ready to learn. Our class periods are 47 minutes long each day, we have so much learning to share and not a moment to spare!
1st Period Starts at 8:10AM:
Students should be inside of their 1st period classroom at 8:10AM when the bell rings to start 1st period. It is recommended that students arrive on campus no later than 8:00AM so that they have time to get breakfast and walk to their 1st period class. Students whose bus arrives on campus late will be given a "Late Bus" pass so that they have time to get breakfast and go to 1st period.
When the bell rings at 8:10, any student who is not in class must report to the front office or the tardy kiosk by the back guard shack to obtain a tardy pass to class. Students are required to have their MHS ID to scan in the check in machine, any student who does not have their ID with them will be sent to the media center to obtain a new ID.
Tardy to Class During the Day:
To support our teachers in recording tardies we have started random tardy 'sweeps' for selected periods and locations. In a tardy sweep, students who are late to class scan their ID at a kiosk in the hallway near their classroom so that the tardy is recorded in Skyward and they are given a printed pass to class. Per the Flagler Schools Code of Conduct, once a student reaches 5 tardies in a quarter for a particular class, they are subject to be referred to the deans for discipline.
