Updates for Stilwell Junior High School Families
May 15, 2023
Message from Principal Kuhnert
Stilwell Families —
The last PTO meeting of the year has been scheduled for this coming Thursday, May 18, at 5 p.m. Our meetings have been virtual this year, but for our last meeting of the year, we are going to have it in person at Stilwell. The in-person meeting will be largely geared towards new families and will give important information about what most families need to know to have a successful transition to Stilwell. We are also going to explain where families can get involved with the PTO at the junior high level. We are asking families to fill out the following form even if they can't make it to the meeting. Below is much of the information you will need to fill out the form. LINK
23-24 Stilwell JH Parent Committee Position Overview
EXTREMELY DIFFERENT:
This is NOT your elementary parent committee. As your children move
into their next educational phase into junior high, the expectations of the parent committee will decrease immensely. Parent Committee meetings are organized and run by the principal of Stilwell. Committees are down to a small handful. This provides parents the chance to help with their children’s school while expanding their other commitments as their children get older. It also starts to align with how the high school parent committee runs. Below are descriptions of the open positions for '23-24 school year. Please review the positions and fill out the Google Form. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Important Dates
Stilwell is looking for 1 more 7th or 8th grade parent to be on the SIAC. The School Improvement Advisory Committee’s (SIAC) role is to learn about and discuss student achievement, programs and community connections, as well as serve as the district's equity committee. The committee's role in this capacity is to learn about our diverse community and the needs of individuals and groups, to apply an equity lens to aspects of the district’s work and to act as an advisory committee to district administration.
Iowa Code requires that the SIAC membership be approved annually by the School Board. The West Des Moines Community Schools SIAC membership includes parents, community members, teachers, students, and building and district administration.
Members engage in the following ways:
Learn about and discuss our goals, student achievement, programs and community connections (district updates)
Engage in shared learning related to diversity, equity and inclusion (diversity, equity and inclusion focus and learning)
Ask questions, offer feedback and perspectives using an equity lens
Share learning and district information with others in the community through authentic interactions
