STRAIGHT TALK
PTA in Texas works tirelessly to ensure the health and happiness of all students. With the U.S. vaping crisis now at a dangerous new high among teens, Texas PTA recognizes the urgency to address this critical situation well before the start of the 87th Legislative Session next year. Students as young as middle school are becoming sick because of this popular yet lethal trend, and much of this crisis is playing out every day in schools across the state.
On February 25, beginning at 12:00 pm, Texas PTA is hosting the first-ever Straight Talk at the Capitol: A Matter of Life and Breath. Three panels will give students, parents, and physicians an opportunity to share their stories on vaping and discuss what can be done – at home, in school, and at the state level. Questions will be taken in advance and addressed as time allows.
THREE WAYS YOU CAN PARTICIPATE in this IMPORTANT EVENT:
The event will be live-streamed from the Texas PTA facebook page. Parents, teachers and students can watch live from anywhere.
The event will be recorded so those who can't tune in live will be able to watch it later.
The Northwest ISD Council of PTAs will be hosting a local watch party in Classroom A of the Texas Health Resources Harris Hospital Alliance. Doors open at 11:30am.
And as always, please join your local PTA at joinpta.org. When we are united as a community about the things we care about, our voices will be heard!

Advocacy
Your Vote Matters!
Support for funding public education cannot be taken for granted and every vote makes a difference!
Northwest ISD Council of PTAs and Texas PTA are nonpartisan organizations that work to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
We do not endorse candidates, but we do advocate for laws that further the education, physical and mental health, welfare, and safety of children and youth, and also advocate for fiscal responsibility regarding public tax dollars in public education funding.
Voting in primary elections matters immensely because those candidates potentially play a pivotal and decisive role in public education.

NISD Longe Range Planning Committee (LRPC)
The NISD LRPC was asked to collectively study and prioritize NISD’s growth and facility needs for future building projects, and then provide recommendations to the Northwest ISD Board of Trustees on any future bond referendum. All information used by the LRPC can be found at https://nisdtxlrpc.org
This article is helpful with understanding NISD fast growth and LRPC: https://communityimpact.com/dallas-fort-worth/keller-roanoke-northeast-fort-worth/education/2020/01/27/fast-growth-in-northwest-isd-drives-facilities-planning-could-mean-2020-bond-package/
The NISD LRPC concluded its recommendation and presented to the NISD Board of Trustees on January 30th, at an open and public hearing. The presentation: https://www.nisdtx.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_232117/File/School%20Board/Board%20Agendas/Board%20Presentation/2020/Jan%202020/AG%20013020%20-%20Long%20Range%20Planning%20Committee%20Recommendations%20-%20Presentation.pdf
The Board has the authority to accept, modify, or reject the recommendations. The next NISD Board of Trustee meeting will be held on Feb 10, and they have until Feb 14 to decide for a May 2020 bond election.
If the NISD school board calls for the bond election, NISD Council of PTAs Executive Board will consider supporting the bond by bringing a resolution of support to the NISD Council of PTAs for a vote. Between when a resolution of support is introduced and the NISD Council of PTAs votes, every local campus PTA will be given the opportunity to vote their support for the resolution. Four members of the NISD Council of PTAs Executive Board served on the NISD LRPC and can attend any meeting necessary to discuss facts about the LRPC process and decision.
