Students from Sycamore High School and Sycamore Junior High participated within five FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams at regional competitions. The two teams with Junior High students received the following recognition:
· Extreme Robotics, with students from Sycamore, Indian Hill, and Madeira, competed in three tournaments this season; the team was recognized with a Design Award at the Cincinnati Qualifying Tournament and as the Inspire Award Runner Up at the Newark Qualifying Tournament makeup day. The Extreme Robotics team hosted a summer camp in July 2018 for rising 1st to 3rd graders and plans to offer the camp again this summer.
· The Sycamore Junior High Circuit Breakers completed its rookie season with teacher Kim Jarvis as one of its coaches. The Circuit Breakers was named the Best Rookie Team at the Loveland scrimmage. It placed 18th out of 30 in the Dayton tournament and 20th out of 30 in the Cincinnati tournament. The team used G Suite to organize, plan, and document items for its Engineering Notebook, and several of its members became some of the first in the world to get certified in G Suite. The team also participated in the Peace Stamps and TangoTab “Feed the City” community service project that supplied more than 479 sandwiches—breaking previous records—to Bernie’s Place homeless shelter.
Circuit Breakers team member Tara Patil summarizes the benefits of FTC. “FTC Robotics helped me expand on ideas and concepts I learned in my Automation and Robotics Class. I learned better communication skills, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills from designing and creating items for our team. Analyzing different components of the game and robot also added to these skills. FTC Robotics is a great place to acquire skills that will serve you a long time.”
Congratulations to the teams!
