At MHS we strive to meet the nutritional needs of our students, staff, teachers and families. Prior to The Healthy School Meals for All program our Mitchell Food and Nutrition Team assured that no student go hungry! We are excited that House Bill 22-1414 was passed by the Colorado legislature and voters promising that all students receive meals for free. For more information about the The Healthy School Meals for All program click on the link provided at the end of this article.
Finally our District Food Service Department recently underwent an extensive CDE/USDA audit last week. Mitchell’s kitchen and team was one of the schools that received a visit by the auditors. I wanted to pass along the compliment that our kitchen team received:
“Extremely impressive team at Mitchell! One of the fastest lines I’ve (USDA auditor) seen. Very efficient, team works well together, and have a great rapport with the students. Great variety of menu options available to students for both breakfast and lunch.”

Student Life
Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context, and are thus considered part of a well-rounded education. Recent research suggests that participation in extracurricular activities may increase students' sense of engagement or attachment to their school, and thereby decrease the likelihood of school failure and dropping out. All January student involvement will be celebrated in this issue.
National Honor Society Inductees
Genesis DeHaan (2025) and Cristian Perrez Serrano (2025) were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS). NHS is a national organization for high school students who are selected for membership based on their demonstration of character, leadership, scholarship, and service.
Monthly Awareness/Observations: March
National Women's History Month
Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.
World Down Syndrome Day March 21st
Down Syndrome Association Singapore launched and hosted the WDSD website from 2006-2010, on behalf of Down Syndrome International (DSi), for global activities to be recorded.
The Brazilian Federation of Associations of Down Syndrome worked with DSi and its members to launch an extensive campaign to generate international support.
Following the joint work of Brazil and Poland, the resolution was adopted by consensus during the plenary meeting of the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday 10 November 2011.
Down syndrome groups and associations around the world campaigned for their governments to co-sponsor the resolution. The resolution was eventually co-sponsored by 78 UN Member States.
In addition, DSi launched an international petition for the adoption of World Down Syndrome Day by the UN. This received more than 12,000 signatures in a 2 week period and was presented to the Chair of the Third Committee.
On 19 December 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day.
The General Assembly decided, with effect from 2012, to observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March each year, and invites all Member States, relevant organizations of the United Nations system and other international organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and the private sector, to observe World Down Syndrome Day in an appropriate manner, in order to raise public awareness of Down syndrome.

Ramadan March 2st
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar.
Healthy adult Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan from dawn until dusk. This includes abstaining from drinking, eating, immoral acts and anger. Other acts of worship such as prayer, reading the Quran and charity are also encouraged during the holy month.
As the Islamic calendar is based around the lunar cycle, the Holy month of Ramadan rotates by approximately ten days each year. This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on Thursday 23rd March 2023, and end on Friday 21st April 2023, depending on the sighting of the moon.
