Updates for LEAs - February 23, 2021
Title IV, Part A School Safety State Initiative has provided information and resources regarding school safety and mental health to ESCs since March 2020. In an effort to assist school districts in the state more effectively, we have selected key information that we can share with school districts that can help your staff and students be safe and mentally strong. Webinar Series Zoom LinkTexas School Safety Center (TxSSC) Advanced Digital Threat Assessment Training
The Advanced Digital Threat Assessment Training will build and expand significantly on the skills gained in the Basic Digital Threat Assessment training. Participants will leave with a concrete understanding of how to find and curate relevant digital information as is typically represented in a real-life digital threat assessment data gathering scenario.
This training is designed for individuals who serve on the Safe and Supportive School Program Team and conduct threat assessments. The Texas School Safety Center, in collaboration with Safer Schools Together (SST), will be offering this one-day Advanced Digital Threat Assessment training at no cost.
NEW — ASK Suicide Gatekeeper Online Training
The Texas Suicide Prevention Collaborative has released a NEW AS+K Suicide Gatekeeper online training available at https://texassuicideprevention.org/training/ask-basic-gatekeeper/.
As of February 10, 2021, ASK online (2016 version) was archived and will no longer issue completion certificates. There has been some confusion on the correct link. Please make sure to use the above link to get to the correct ASK Suicide Gatekeeper online training.
NetSmartz Internet Safety Train-the-Trainer Announced
Target Audience: School Resource Officers, Law Enforcement Personnel, Volunteer Trainers, and Educators
When: Thursday, March 11, 2021
9 AM - 12 PM
Where: Online Training (FREE with registration)
This Internet Safety Train-the-Trainer Program is specifically designed to teach school resource officers, law enforcement personnel, volunteer trainers, and educators how to deliver comprehensive Internet Safety Programs to children and parents. Additionally, participants will receive supplemental materials, resource lists, and a flash drive containing all pertinent documents (upon completion of the training, submission of evaluation, and scheduling pick-up of materials). It is being co-sponsored by Texas Center for the Missing, the Houston Young Lawyers Foundation, and the Children's Assessment Center.

Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools | Free Resources
REMS is providing several free virtual trainings and resources, covering a wide range of topics.
Modalities include the following (links are clickable):
- Online Courses — self-paced virtual trainings that generate certificates upon completion;
- Webinars — archived virtual trainings with subject matter experts;
- Virtual Trainings by Request — interactive and dynamic virtual trainings delivered to your education agency by REMS TA Center’s trainers, available by request; and
- Specialized Training Packages (K-12 only) — materials for school safety teams or school safety leaders to use to learn on their own or deliver trainings to colleagues and their sites.
Safe and Supportive Schools Program (SSSP) – MTSS for School Mental Health: Focus Groups Needed
In partnership with the TIEMH at UT and HHSC TEA is developing 10 Training Modules for the SSSP – MTSS for School Mental Health.
We are in need of a diverse group of SSSP Teams from across Texas to provide feedback to us as we make final edits to roll out for the 2021/2022 school year.
Who: TEA requests that each focus group session reflect a sample of multi-disciplinary members from four LEA SSSP teams.
When:
- The focus group session for Module 1 will be held on March 10, 2021 from 9-11am.
- The focus group for Module 2 will be held on March 17th, 2021, from 11am-1pm.
What: The purpose of the Safe & Supportive School Program (SSSP) MTSS for School Mental Health Modules Focus Groups are to participate in draft training sessions and provide feedback related to clarity and content in relation to achieving module objectives. Participants will listen, observe draft content slides, reflect, and make suggestions in response to focused questions during 2 two-hour working sessions (2 hours per module, 4 hours total).
Where: Focus groups will take place online via a Zoom link from Westat.

TEA Extending the 2019-2021 School Safety and Security Grant
TEA will be extending 2019-2021 School Safety and Security Grant period to 05/31/2022.
This grant provides funding to public schools for additional safety and security equipment (campus hardening) such as exterior doors with push bars; metal detectors at school entrances; erected vehicle barriers; security systems that monitor and record school entrances, exits, and hallways; campus-wide active shooter alarm systems that are separate from fire alarms; two-way radio systems; perimeter security fencing; bullet-resistant glass or film for school entrances; and door-locking systems.

The U.S. Department of Education (ED), Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, Office of Safe and Supportive Schools, and the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments (NCSSLE) invites you to join a presentation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ED on new science-based resources and tools for safe in-person operation of K-12 schools. – USDE
This informative webinar would meet the intent and purposes of the Title IV, Part A content areas: ‘well-rounded education and improving school conditions for student learning.’ Registration is required.
