Shepaug Valley School seniors embarked on an exciting trip to Boston for their senior excursion. The itinerary included a visit to Six Flags New England, where the students spent a fun-filled day experiencing thrilling rides and attractions.
The group visited Quincy Market, a bustling marketplace with various vendors selling everything from souvenirs to delicious food. The students enjoyed exploring the market's many stalls, sampling local cuisine, and watching street performers.
The seniors visited the New England Aquarium, where they marveled at the variety of sea creatures on display. From mesmerizing jellyfish to majestic sea turtles, the students were in awe of the underwater world.
The group visited Salem, Massachusetts, where they learned about the city's connection to the infamous Salem witch trials of the late 1600s. The seniors gained a deeper understanding of the events that unfolded during this dark chapter in American history.
Throughout the trip, the seniors had a great time exploring the city and bonding with each other. They returned home with new memories, a better understanding of the world around them, and a sense of appreciation for the rich history and culture of Boston.
Elementary Animations
Recently, a group of third, fourth, and fifth-grade students from Region 12's elementary schools came together to design and create a variety of animations. These included flip book, zoetrope, computer, cell and stop motion animation techniques. These animators hope you enjoy a sampling of their creations.
3D Modeling & Animation
3D Modeling and Animation students studied internal and external character traits and story structure in order to plan and create their own flip books in their Introduction to Animation unit.
Senior Project Spotlight
Hidden Heroes: Women Behind Justice
Ella's project is called, "Hidden Heroes: Women Behind Justice". Ella is using her project to broaden the community's understanding of the pivotal role of women in four social justice movements in the 20th century. By exploring the lives and work of Claudette Colvin, Fannie Lou Hamer, Rigoberta Menchu, and Dolores Huerta, Ella is doing her part to rectify who we consider heroes and whose stories are worth elevating in our national narrative. Ella says, "Claudette Colvin has been my favorite all the way. And I thought making the art about her story was really cool." Additionally, Ella is teaching herself new (to her) artistic techniques and media, including gouache and spray paint. Come see Ella's work at her final presentation in late May!
Outdoor Fitness
Shepaug Valley Partnership (SVP) recently took advantage of the spring warmth while it lasted, with a hike on the Bee Brook Loop located in Washington Depot, CT. They also visited Laurel Ridge Daffodil Farm in Litchfield and spent an afternoon walking among the thousands of daffodils in bloom, admiring the colorful display.
Field Trip to Naugatuck Valley Community College
On April 27, seventeen students in 10th-12th grade went on a field trip to tour Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) Waterbury Campus with Samantha Steinis and Lisa Roush from the Counseling Department. NVCC is a public, two-year, associate degree-granting, co-educational, non-residential college and is one of 17 institutions comprising Connecticut State Colleges and Universities.
Mohamed Chaouki, Admissions and Community Outreach started the day with an informative Powerpoint presentation about admissions, the cost, and the benefits of studying at NVCC. The students had a tour of the medical building and saw the Physical Therapy Assistant students in action. These career-oriented students are being prepared to work under the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist in a variety of settings such as acute care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, long-term care facilities, and a number of other outpatient facilities. We also saw the classroom for the EMT Program which included an ambulance to help teach students the skills required for EMT National Certification.
Another highlight was a tour of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center in the spacious and modern Technology Hall which provides students with hands-on, state-of-the-art manufacturing and technical education.
A visit with the theater department, and a discussion with a few current students, followed by lunch in the campus cafe, wrapped up the field trip.
We are grateful for the time that Mr. Chaouki spent with our students and his advice on how they should advocate for themselves on behalf of their future and their education.
HRRA Earth Day Recycling Billboard Contest
Each year the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA) along with Union Savings Bank and the Regional Recycling Task Force invite schools to bring awareness to their cause and encourage K-12 students to create a recycling billboard design. This year’s theme was “Recycling Outside the Bin”.
Senior, Lily Kovacs and junior, Ona Swanson both had their artwork chosen as regional winners in their age groups. They were honored at a ceremony on April 26 at The Newtown Community Center.
