December 4, 2023
Dear Families,
Southwood Glen students learned about the importance of sportsmanship in our first assembly of the school year. The assembly featured Coach Wegner and several of his UWM Baseball players sharing personal stories and strategies related to sportsmanship. Our students did a great job listening and learning and will continue to learn more as we focus on sportsmanship in school this month.
Yours in education,
Bridget Mowbray
Dear SWG Families,
As Dr. Mowbray mentioned above, last Friday we kicked off our school-wide sportsmanship focus with an all school assembly and special visit from the UW-Milwaukee Baseball Team. During the next few weeks we will continue learning more about sportsmanship, why it’s important, and how we can show it both in and out of school. Throughout December students will be working to earn special Purple Sportsmanship Pride Slips. When earned students will put them in their classroom’s special sportsmanship pride slip bag to be entered into our student vs. staff relay races before winter break.
If you could continue the sportsmanship discussions at home, that would be very helpful! Some questions and conversations starters you could use include:
What does it mean to you to be a good sport?
Why is it important to be a good sport when participating in games, activities, or competitions?
How does being a good sport help improve our relationships with others?
Can you think of a time when someone was not a good sport? How did that make you feel?
Have you ever not been a good sport? What happened after?
Is it always easy to be a good sport? Why or why not?
What strategies can you use to stay calm and composed when you feel frustrated or disappointed about losing?
How can we encourage and support our peers to practice good sportsmanship?
Thank you,
Jacki Johnston
School Psychologist
