Around The World Week
June 26th-30th
Counselor Highlight
Shane Shannon, Camp Office Assistant- Shane is a rising high school senior and this is his third year at Big Blue Summer. Shane does just about anything and everything for Big Blue, creating rosters, captaining scavenger hunts, and making sure every camper has an unforgettable experience. Shane enjoys tennis and basketball in his free time. Shane had this to share of his camp experience, "Every school year I look forward to summer, mostly because I get to work with the campers here at Big Blue!"
Around the World Week
C - Curiosity
This week in Nature Studies, campers explored the problem of water pollution by attempting to create their own water filter systems. “Nature Rachel” had campers attempt to clean muddy water in a bucket, allowing campers to confront the difficulty of the task, before guiding them through some filtration techniques. Younger groups also read The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss, to spur discussion about conservation and stewardship.
O - Openness
“Around the World” Week gave campers an opportunity to learn a little about other countries and cultures. In addition to our visiting artists - Juan and Mai from White Tiger Dojo, and Richard Reiter with his African drums - C.I.T.s left country facts in each group’s bunk and organized a Fun Friday activity for the Minis and Kindergarten groups that allowed them to fill their “passports” as they traveled from country to country. In the art studio, campers completed a personal culture collage.
D - Dedication
Our campers are working hard to improve their skills at the pool. All of the Minis are now comfortable in the water. In fact, some of the most timid now greet their swim instructors with eager smiles! Three of our kindergarten campers swam across the pool unassisted for the first time this week, and swimmers at all levels are working on skills from floating to diving. Great work, campers!
E - Enthusiasm
This Friday finished off with a visit from Liberty Balloons, who taught us how a hot air balloon works and then brought us inside the balloon itself! The balloon, inflated by fans on the floor of Bristol Gymnasium, easily held the entire camp. Following our balloon encounter, day-campers raced around campus with their groups trying to “capture” a photo of each of our ten bunks’ hidden flags. By untangling clues, many groups managed to make it all the way “around the world,” but group 5/6a made it back the fastest. Congratulations, travelers!
Week 2 Big Blue Summer
H - Honor
Our goal to give back to the community around us has taken root with campers donating this week to Operation Shoebox, an organization based in Hillsborough that sends care packages to US troops stationed around the world. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this cause. Next week, we are collecting for the Food Bank of NJ. Each bunk will be challenged to build a sculpture out of their contributions of non-perishable food items, so take a look in your pantry today!
