Westbrook Traffic Flow Before and After School
Student Drop-off and Pick-up procedures (for students who will be dropped up/picked up in Westbrook Parking Lots)
For Students who will be eating breakfast before school:
Breakfast is served from 8:05 to 8:25 in the Cafeteria (South Entrance). All students will be dropped off at the South Entrance and go into the cafeteria.
For student who will NOT be eating breakfast before school:
Westbrook does not have any outdoor supervision for students before 8:10am. Please do not drop off students until 8:10am if they are not eating breakfast.
Students in grades K-3 will drop off/pick up in the East Parking Lot by the Main Entrance. Students in grade 4-6 will drop off/pick up in the South Parking Lot by the Boys and Girls Club.
If families have siblings in grades K-3 and 4-6, please drop off with the K-3 students.
In both parking lots, please follow the following traffic pattern:
There are two lanes of traffic: curb lane and left lane.
Use the curb lane to stop and drop-off/pick-up students. We encourage you to have your student sit on the right side of the vehicle to make for safe enter and exit of the vehicle.
The left lane is for through traffic only. No stopping allowed in the left lane. (See images below)
Please stay in your vehicle if you are in the drop-off/pickup lane.Teachers will assist your student into the vehicle. If you would like to get out of your vehicle to get your student in or out of the car, please park in a parking stall.
For Students That Walk to School
Students who are walking to school or being dropped off in the neighborhood can go to either entrance but we encourage Grades K-3 to go to the Main Entrance and Grades 4-6 go to the South Entrance (Boys and Girls Club). Once students have reached the sidewalk by an entrance, they will be expected to remain at that entrance.
Entering the Building
Students will be allowed to enter Westbrook hallways at 8:20am. Grab and Go breakfast will be available for students who did not eat in the cafeteria before school. School begins at 8:30am. It is critical that students are at school before 8:30am. Students with a Grab and Go Breakfast will have until 8:40am to eat their breakfast.

BIST Implementation at Westbrook
On Thursday, a BIST consultant presented to our entire staff and we have started the process of adopting the philosophy and logistics that go along with BIST. We are going to put heavy focus on a few things this year, these include:
The Goals for Life
- I can make good choices even when I am mad(or upset)
- I can be okay, even when others are not okay
- I can do something even when I don't want to or its hard
We will also teach students the expectations:
- It is never okay to be hurtful (It is always okay to be kind)
- It is never okay to be disruptive (It is always okay to be a good learner)
You can learn more about the BIST model at their website: bist.org
We look forward to continuing to work with the BIST Team throughout the year and Westbrook families to continue to support all students and their needs.
Westside MTSS
Westside Community Schools continues the implementation of MTSS, which stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports. MTSS in Westside assures that we regularly monitor student skills and follow-up with providing students what they need to be successful in learning. Beginning in August, this means that we first screen all students to determine their current skill levels and plan our instruction to meet their needs.
What is MTSS? MTSS is a framework for providing instruction and support to promote the academic and behavioral success of all children. Individual children’s progress & skills are measured, and these results are used to make decisions about further instruction and intervention. The MTSS process is flexible and allows for a continuum of supports designed to meet the needs of individual students. This support may be provided in a large or small group by the classroom teacher or other support staff, either within or outside the classroom.
What does this mean for my child? A key component of the MTSS process is that all children receive high quality instruction in their classroom. Universal screenings are brief tests used to measure the progress of all students and are given three times per year. As a result of the screenings, students may be identified as needing some degree of supplemental intervention in addition to the instruction they are receiving in their classroom. If your child is identified as needing intervention you will be notified. Please contact your child’s building principal with questions.
Nebraska Reading Improvement Act: The Nebraska Reading Improvement Act went into effect at the start of the 2019-2020 school year. The goal is that all Nebraska students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of third grade. This is accomplished by ensuring all students have access to high-quality instruction and for struggling readers to receive targeted support (intervention). Our current MTSS framework in Westside Community Schools already allows for us to meet these state requirements. Also, the more students continue to read, review math facts, and write/journal each day at home, in addition to their instruction from school, the more secure their skills may become.
Free Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and Lunch at Westbrook will continue to be free for all students since Westbrook qualifies for federal community eligibility provisions. However, we request that you still complete the below application if it applies to your household. Having an accurate count of students who qualify will continue to provide us federal grant opportunities to support our students.
If applicable, families in each household should apply for free and reduced meal benefits (which carry over to other opportunities including technology, camps, band, etc.)
