North Syracuse Central School District's Electronic News
December 1, 2023
Hello North Syracuse Central School District parents, guardians, teachers, and staff,
I hope this message finds you well as we kick off the month of December! Today, I had the pleasure of attending the 8th-grade Honor Roll celebration at North Syracuse Junior High School. This morning's ceremony recognized our newest group of junior high students who achieved Honor Roll status during the first semester of their first year at the junior high school. The auditorium was filled with positive energy as Principal Turose welcomed attendees and families gathered to celebrate their children's successes. After the ceremony, students and families filed into the school's cafeterias for a celebratory breakfast.
I had a chance to interact with staff, families and students and I'm pictured here with Taisha Robles, who is a bus driver for the district and mom to two students here. Taisha told me that she is grateful for a flexible schedule that allows her to attend school events with her children. As a parent, it isn't always easy to attend school events but when possible, it is such a great thing to do. Our children may not always recognize that right away, but your presence matters to them. I want to extend a big thank you to every parent, guardian and family member who takes time to attend a school event.
December is a big month for celebrations and concerts and is a perfect opportunity to get into our schools and check out the great things that are happening. I invite you to check out our online school and athletics calendars and to get involved.
Wishing you all a wonderful December filled with joy, warmth, and continued achievements.
Sincerely,
Daniel D. Bowles, Superintendent of Schools

Meal program update
Beginning Friday, December 1, 2023, all students in the North Syracuse Central School District (NSCSD) will be eligible to receive school meals as part of the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) Program.
CEP is a simplified meal service option that allows schools to provide meals at no cost to all students without requiring families to apply for free and reduced-price meals. Instead, school districts receive federal funding based on a formula using existing data from SNAP and other programs, and local or state funds must fill any gap between program costs and federal support.
CNS photography students place first and second in local photo contest
Mrs. Blaski’s Intermediate & Advanced Photography students recently participated in the 15th Annual Bousquet Holstein Photography Contest. The theme of this year’s contest was “Americana” and was based on the artworks of Frank Buffalo Hyde’s Everson Museum exhibit: Native Americana.
“‘Americana is broadly defined as anything associated with or characteristic of the culture, civilization, history, or geography of America. This year’s contest challenged student photographers to capture their personal definition of “Americana,” through the juxtaposition of their own history, lived experience, and culture within the broader iconography of America,” shared Bousquet Holstein.
Snow day, delay and early closing information
Winter weather has already arrived in Central New York and the North Syracuse Central School District wants to remind our families and community members of some important snow day, delay and early closing information.
When schools are closed because of weather conditions or other emergencies, early announcements will be sent out via ParentSquare and posted on the district website (www.nscsd.org). On certain rare occasions, emergency conditions, such as impending storms, may necessitate the dismissal of students before regular school closing time. In such an event, announcements will be sent out in the same way.
Efforts will also be made to have the emergency closing announced through local media but parents and guardians should always rely on the district website for the most up-to-date information.
In order to ensure that your child will be properly cared for if no one is at home, please make arrangements at the beginning of the school year so that your child will be assured shelter upon arriving home. Be sure to carefully explain all of these arrangements to your child.

Building COMMUNITY at Gillette Road Middle School
For one of the half-days earlier this school year, Gillette Road Middle School had a Community Connection Day to focus on the Building Planning Team’s goal of increasing student relationship skills and social awareness.
Students participated in fun team building activities, community circle meetings in their classrooms and worked on the Positivity Project character trait of teamwork.
Principal Jones shared pictures of the team building activities earlier this year and Associate Principal Francescotti recently wrote to share information about the school’s mural, which is used as this week's newsletter background.
Francescotti wrote, “To cap off the day, students were asked to create a single square in the style of Kandinsky, that would be used to create one large mural to represent GRMS as a community. It took a long time to assemble all of the squares into one beautiful piece of art; each unique member of our school fits together to create our community. Together we are a masterpiece!”
Many thanks to Tina Duffy for sharing the beautiful mural photos!
