ToC Mentorship Program
October 2023
October 10, 2023
Teachers of Color Mentorship Program participants and invited guests had the opportunity to continue their professional development with the Catalyst Approach . The morning kicked off with high energy and with the talented Jamie Tan, the expert coach in charge of this transformative work. Participants reviewed classroom protocols previously learned and engaged in role play to practice applying these powerful pedagogical approaches. As the day progressed, participants continued to internalize the concepts and collaborate with each other on ways to implement these tools in their classrooms. In this way, teachers can make connections with their students, lead them to success, and create equitable learning systems for all while having high academic expectations. The afternoon was reserved for those participants and invited guests who were new to the Catalyst Approach. They learned about the “why” behind the “Whole Group Classroom Leadership and Support” Training - how the brain is hardwired to need connections; it does what it knows; it determines what to attend to and what to ignore; it asks questions, “Am I loved?/Do I belong?” and “Am I safe?” Self-management is about managing yourself, not others because YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Your actions have an immediate impact on others. The afternoon participants learned three foundational skills and were invited to try them in their classrooms. Many participants took on the invitation and applied the skills with success for the rest of that week! Participants can view photos here.

Resources
District 196 Strategic Roadmap
The work of the Teachers of Color Mentorship Program aligns with District 196 Strategic Roadmap. Resources that are provided align to one or more of the four strategic priorities of Wellbeing, Achievement, Equity, and Resources.
Strategic Priorities: Wellbeing and Equity
As shared by John A. Powell, “Belonging, or being fully human, means more than having access. Belonging entails the right to both co-create and make demands on society.” In Belonging through a Culture of Dignity, Cobb and Krownapple unpack how inclusion, dignity, and belonging are foundational to equity reshaping educational experiences for Students of Color in the public school system. Recommendations are shared on how to develop dispositions for dignity and how to shape a culture inclusive of dignity and belonging in educational settings.
