A message from the Principal
Greetings from Dr. Pimpleton
Dear Mariner High School Students and Families,
Every day I wake up thankful for the opportunity to serve as principal at Mariner High School. We have some great students here and some wonderful programs that provide them with opportunities to learn and to build community with peers. This month I have witnessed some amazing triumphs in sports (congratulations especially to our varsity football team for their win over Kamiak), some outstanding concerts from our choir and band program, and multiple successful community events including our fall harvest festival. This week we even learned that one of our cross-country students, qualified for the state competition. While there is much to celebrate and most students are coming to school and making positive choices, I want to use this month’s newsletter submission to call your attention to two safety related challenges we are dealing with and to ask your support.
Providing each student with a world class education that prepares them for success in college, career, community, and life can only happen in environment that is physically, socially, and emotionally safe. The violence and substance abuse challenges we see in our schools and communities is an alarming symptom of a much larger public health crisis. Effectively addressing it will require all of us – school staff, families, students, and the community to come together and collaboratively problem solve solutions.
With the prevalence of electronic delivery devices, schools across the country are experiencing significant issues with teen smoking and marijuana use. Teenagers do not always fully appreciate the fact that the human brain is not fully developed until sometime around age 25 and that experimentation at their age comes with substantial risks. Marijuana use during the teenage years has been associated with difficulty thinking and problem solving; problems with memory and learning; reduced coordination; difficulty maintaining attention; and problems with school and social life. The long-term impacts of teenage marijuana use include depression, social anxiety, and an increased risk of long-lasting mental disorders such as schizophrenia. Approximately 3 in 10 people who use marijuana have marijuana use disorder. The risk of marijuana use disorder is substantially increased the younger a person starts smoking. Parents can help by speaking frequently with your children about the risks associated with marijuana use. Even if marijuana is used by adults in the home, it is important that teens understand the stakes are different for them at their age. The country is also seeing an increase in the number of incidents in which a teen has died from taking something they thought was one thing that was laced with something else.
We are also looking for parent volunteers who might want to serve as campus rovers, checking bathrooms and hallways, positively connecting with students who are out of class and redirecting them to where they are supposed to be. Please reach out to us if you would be interested in volunteering on a regular basis as a roamer.
Lastly, we have had a troubling number of fights on campus and a disturbing trend of students using their cell phones and social media to instigate and record them. Board POLICY 3245 – Students and Telecommunication devices stipulates that:
“Students in possession of telecommunications devices including but not limited to pagers, beepers, cellular phones, smart phones and other related personal electronic communication devices ("Telecommunication Devices") shall observe the following conditions:
- Telecommunication Devices shall be turned on and operated only before and after the regular school day unless (a) an emergency situation exists that involves imminent physical danger, (b) otherwise authorized by a school administrator or (c) otherwise authorized by school rules.
- Students shall not use Telecommunication Devices in a manner that poses a threat to academic integrity, disrupts the educational learning environment, harasses/bullies/threatens other students or invades the privacy rights of others.”
While we are not currently considering revival of a school wide cell phone ban, we want to be clear in stating that using telecommunications devices to encourage and/or record fights, adds pressure to students to fight when they might otherwise make a different choice. It presents a substantial disruption to the learning environment and is detrimental to the health and safety of students and staff. For that reason, students using electronic devices in this way will be subject to school disciplinary action including potential suspension from school and the loss of the privilege of possessing a telecommunications device during the school day.
Please help us to make our campus safer by talking with your children about these two important issues. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Dr. Marcus Pimpleton, principal

Attendance
Marauder families,
If your student has a planned early dismissal please call the attendance line or send a
note with the student in the morning. They will receive an early release pass and will be allowed to leave class at their designated time. If you give a note to your student, that is the most helpful.
If you come in to the main office and the student is at class difficult to reach by phone or at lunch we may not be able to get a hold of your student. It is most convenient for you and the office when a notice is planned ahead.
Please keep in mind Mariner has over 2,000 students and only two attendance workers. If you call and we do not answer please leave a message and we will enter in your student's absence. You can also contact attendance via parent square.
We are here to help you with questions or concerns about Attendance. Please reach out and remember Attendance matters. 😊
Thank you,
Ms. Tammie & Ms. Roberta

News from the Library
We will be working with classes this month to sign up students for a Sno-Isle Library card. We are fortunate to have the Sno-Isle Book Mobile visit the Mariner campus on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Students can place holds and pick up library items that they have placed on hold. The bookmobile is in the West End parking lot from 1:00-2:30. Students can also access digital and audiobooks, and on-line research tools using their card. The Sno-Isle Mariner Branch also provides a quiet place to study, several items to check out as well as printing services. For more information on the amenities of Sno-Isle Libraries visit: https://www.sno-isle.org/
The Academic Support Center is open in the library during the school day and during student intervention time. If your child needs additional help with an assignment or needs a quiet space to get work or a test completed, they are welcome to come to the library on a pass and receive help.
Warmly,
Stephanie Wilson

Latest news from ASB and Leadership
October is always a busy month for ASB and Leadership II, and we had an amazing (and tiring!) time working on our various events at Mariner. Our spirit week had tons of participation and varied from class colors to Barbie and Ken. This led to our homecoming events, such as our homecoming game, court, and dance.
We elected our homecoming court and celebrated those nominated through an assembly. We had over 60 elected court members representing various clubs, sports, and classes. The assembly was wonderfully decorated, with a runaway lined with lights. It was modeled after our theme, A Night in Neverland, for homecoming. Court members were also celebrated at our homecoming football game, during the halftime show. All this led to our homecoming dance, organized by our sophomore class. They beautifully decorated our main gym and entrance reminiscent of Neverland, the setting of Peter Pan. Our students had a wonderful time dancing, taking photos, and celebrating. Our homecoming events were very successful and our ASB and leadership enjoyed planning them.
Upcoming at the end of this month, we are hosting Harvest Fest on Halloween. Harvest Fest is an event for kids to enjoy games and get candy at Mariner and is always a hallmark event for us. Please bring a canned item for entry to Harvest Fest!
We are looking forward to it and hope to see you there.
Regards,
ASB and Leadership
