Huffman Headlines

Dear Huffman families,

As winter gets closer and the days get shorter, I am reminded how much I really do like this time of year. With the change in the weather, I don't feel pressured to get outside and soak up every bit of sunshine, and I'm happy to spend a little more time at home at the end of the day. I hope that you are able to enjoy some quieter days at home as well.

I also love the feeling of gratitude that becomes so visible as we approach the winter holidays. I am thankful for the Huffman community that cares for our kids in so many different ways, and I'm thankful to work with a staff that goes above and beyond to meet our students' needs every single day.

Speaking of gratitude, we are having our annual Canned Food Drive from Nov 8th-17th. One way that we can foster a sense of gratitude in our children is by encouraging them to help others, and that is one goal of this event. We also have a friendly competition going with our neighbors at Rabbit Creek Elementary School, and we are hoping to bring back the trophy to Huffman this year. While the ASD Transportation department has made gains in hiring and training new bus drivers, there is still a driver shortage. Huffman route 306 will be temporarily suspended for three weeks from November 22 - December 10. We had a different route suspension in September, and I was impressed with how our community worked together to find solutions to get all of our kids to school. If you are in need of help during this time, please reach out to our front office and we will try and connect you with a neighbor who may be able to assist. If you will be driving during this time and have an extra seat, please let us know! More information is available at the district transportation page.

Have you thought about joining our team here at Huffman? We have openings for a teacher's assistant position. It can be great to have a job that is on the same schedule as your child, and we can provide the training you'll need to be successful. Anchorage School District will continue to offer COVID vaccine clinics for anyone ages 5 and older throughout the month. Please visit the ASD Vaccine Info page for locations, times, and the link to pre-register.

Thanks to our wonderful PTO volunteers, the Husky Hutch (our school store) will be open every Friday morning before school. Students may come in the building after 8:50 and shop for items if they choose.

Thank you to everyone that has kept their children home when they weren't feeling well. We know that this is a huge impact on families, but it really does help us keep all kids safe and healthy at school. Remember that if your child has any illness symptoms, they will need a lab based negative COVID test to return to school, unless you choose to quarantine for 10 days.
