Principal's Message
It was another great week at Pershing! I was so impressed with the amount of participation I saw from students during last week's spirit week. It was awesome and so fun to see how creative our students are with their school spirit - a big thank you to our ASB Advisor Ms. Robe and to all the ASB students for organzing our first spirit week! I have a few pictures below but I will be sharing more of the pictures at Back to School Night.
Speaking of Back to School Night (BTSN), I am hoping that many Pershing families will be able to join us for our first in-person Back to School Night in two years! BTSN will be held this Thursday, Sept. 22nd from 6:00-8:00 PM. The evening will begin with a short presentation in the auditorium and then families will go visit each of their child's classes for 10 minutes. Families can also show at the book fair in the library, get help accessing PowerSchool Parent Portal if you have been having issues, and find out ways to volunteer on campus. Students will be bringing home a copy of their schedule Monday so that parents know which rooms to go to. The classroom presentations are geared towards parents but you are welcome to bring your child(ren) with you. Parents are responsible for supervising their children during the event. We are looking forward to seeing you on Thursday and continuing to show off all the great things happening on campus.
Finally, September 15th marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month. San Diego Unified and Pershing Middle School recognize the heritage of Hispanic Americans in our schools and city, and encourage all students, staff, and San Diego families to deepen their understanding of the Latinx community by celebrating their histories, cultures and contributions.

BOOK FAIR THIS WEEK
A friendly reminder that Pershing is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair this week. Teachers will have the option of taking their classes to the book fair throughout the week. Students may go on their own during lunch or after school from 2:50-3:45 PM. The book fair will also be open 5:30-7:45 PM on Back to School Night this Thursday.
For more information about the bookk fair visit the Pershing Book Fair Main Page for Parents. On this page you also have the option of setting up an "ewallet" for your child so they can purchase books and other items without having to bring money on campus. For a video guide about ewallet and how you can set up the ewallet please CLICK HERE.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL PLAY
We are still looking for a parent or community volunteer to help with the school play, particularly someone who would be interested in directing the play. Please contact our community assistant, Ms. Johanna Moreno at jmorenoperez@sandi.net if you are interested in helping support the school play this year. If we can get volunteers in place we would be looking to start auditions at the end of October or beginning of November.
DROP OFF AND PICK UP TRAFFIC CONCERNS
Please make sure that you are following all traffic laws when dropping off and pick up your child. As you know, school traffic is always a challenge at any site and Pershing is no exception. The most important goal is to keep people safe - we can never be in that much of a hurry that we endanger our own safety or the safety of others.
We have been receiving complaints about people illegally passing cars on San Carlos Drive, cars attempting illegal u-turns in the middle of heavy traffic, and parents letting their children out of cars in the middle of the street. We have reached out to school police and requested additional support but we are also asking families to plan for the heavy traffic and make sure they are being safe and following all laws.
HENRY CLUSTER MEETING VIA ZOOM ON SEPT 22nd @5:00 PM

WAS YOUR CHILD ABSENT ON PICTURE DAY?
Not to worry. Our make-up picture day is scheduled for October 18th
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS EXHIBITING COVID SYMPTOMS
If you child is exhibiting any of the following symptoms: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea please keep them home from school unless they have have negative COVID test or until the symptoms have abated. If your child is sent home from school with one of these symptoms they must have a negative test to return the next school day. An at home COVID test would be an acceptable test.
PICKING UP A CHILD EARLY FROM CAMPUS
Although it is always best to try and schedule appointments outside the school day so students are not missing instructional time we know that is not always possible. In the event you need to take your child out of school early, a friendly reminder that the person picking up your child must be on the emergency contacts list in PowerSchool and they must have photo ID verifying their identity. This includes parents as well.
REPORTING AN ABSENCE
Please remember if your child is absent from school to contact the office to clear their attendance. The easiest way to report the absence is to email our School Clerk, Ms. Devin Caputo at dcaputo@sandi.net. You may also leave a voicemail for Ms. Caputo by calling 619-362-3624 and dailing 1, or you may write a note and have your child turn it into the office upon their return.
SHORT-TERM INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACTS: if you child is going to miss 5 or more consecutive days of school for a medical procedure, family vacation, sports tournament, etc. please contact Ms. Caputo so we can set up a short-term independent study contract and ensure your child stays on track with assignments. These contracts must be set up BEFORE the absence begins. We are requesting that you call for the independent study contract 5 days before the absence will begin to give us time to notify the teachers, collect work if necessary, etc.
PERSHING WEBSITE: MAKING PROGRESS BUT STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION:
Over the next month I am going to be working with IT staff to update and streamline our school website to make it more user friendly. The website still remains a good place to find important information about the school but other good sources of information about the upcoming school year can be found in these weekly newsletters and please follow us on Instagram @pershing_sdusd or follow me on Twitter @melanie_kray for the latest information.
