Bourne Middle School News
Weekly notes from the Principal's office
We've had a GREAT start to the school year at BMS!
Today marked the end of our first "7-Day cycle."
All of our students are doing a great job getting to classes, demonstrating our B2B expected behaviors, and jumping into fun and engaging learning activities. We are excited to welcome caregivers next Thursday for Back to School Night. Please note that this event is for adults - there are no activities planned for students. See below for the Back to School Night schedule.

Back To School Night
Back to School Night is September 14th. Each grade level has a time for caregivers to meet the team teachers. Grade 6 will hold our Camp Bournedale informational meeting, and Grade 8 will hold our Washington DC meeting. See the schedule for each grade level below.
BMS "HOW TO" Guides
Wondering what do to if you need to dismiss your student?
Or what your student should do if they want to stay after? We have "How To" guides for both parents and students that give answers to our most frequently asked questions!
After School Activies
Late buses and after school activities will be starting on September 25th
We have pushed the start of late buses back to September 25 to give our buses one more week to adjust to new schedules and routes. This will also give us a week to see any impacts of the Bridge work.
Right now we are in the process of finalizing our after school offerings. Flyers will be available at Back to School Night, and students will be able to choose the activites they are interested in attending. There is plenty of room for everyone, so students do not need to worry that activies will close.
Please support the BMS PTA!
The BMS PTA Needs YOUR help to raise the funds needed to support our students!
From fun family events like the Spaghetti Supper, to field trips for students, to social events like dances, and the grade 8 celerbration, our PTA needs everyone's help to raise the funds needed to continue to offer these events. Unfortunatley, they are starting the year off with less that $1.00!
Please consider contributing to the PTA "Direct Give." This money goes directly to BMS students and supports many of the enriching and community building activities we are able to offer throughout the year.
You can send a check to school with your student (Please be sure "BMS Direct Give" is in the subject line) or you can Venmo the PTA directly at @Bourne-PTA (again, please be sure you include BMS Direct Give in the subject). Every penny helps!
WIN (What I Need) is starting Monday
Our first 6-week WIN Cycle is starting Monday, 9/11/23.
Students were assigned to WIN intervention or enrichment groups based on 2023 MCAS data as well as early formative assessments. This cycle, MOST students are participating in intervention groups focused on reviewing foundational skills. Some students have demonstrated readiness for enrichment activities and will recieve a sign-up email. Throughtout the year, students will participate in a wide range of WIN groups, each one designed to support students with specific skills they need to develop.
Upcoming Benchmark Assessments
During the month of September, BMS students will take math, ELA, and Social Studies benchmarks.
The Math and ELA Benchmarks are completed on Galileo, and the Social Studies Benchmark is a "Document Based Question (DBQ)" Writing assignment.
Benchmark Dates are:
- Math - Tuesday, September 12
- ELA - Tuesday, September 19
- DBQ - Tuesday, September 26
These benchmark scores will be one factor teachers consider when developing our cycle 2 WIN groups. We also rely on benchmark scores to identify areas of growth for each individual student.
ALICE Training
On September 12, Mr. Lundell will be leading ALICE training with all students.
ALICE protocols are used in the unlikely event of an intruder in the building. At BMS we focus on communicating any concerning information, being alert to our surroundings, and making the best decision possible with the information available. Learn more about our upcoming training HERE.
