The color of St. Patrick’s Day was originally blue.

Wearing green has become a staple of St. Patrick’s Day, but the holiday was originally associated with the color blue. It’s thought that the shift to green happened because of Ireland’s nickname “The Emerald Isle,” the green in the Irish flag and the shamrock, or clover. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn as early as the 17th century.

The CCG is happy to announce that Catherine Wright, in collaboration with Shea Watts (WU adjunct religion professor and Southern-born theologian whose forthcoming book Where The Spirit Is explores the political contours of the early Pentecostal movement in the US), and longtime Wingate Bulldog Rev. Harry Workman has published the first in a series of blogs on vocation and their collaboratively designed new course -- Food and Faith: Health and Happiness Around the Many Tables of Our Lives. Their first blog called "Our Entangled Banks" is now available on the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education's (NetVUE) Blog called Vocation Matters (LINK).

Future blog posts will highlight other key aspects of their work together co-creating this course:

• table-fellowship as a manifestation of vocation and being-with
• service-learning and community engagement as the co-creative pedagogical processes helping us to re-imagine life together;
• the sharing of the course as a whole for others to join in.

They are so grateful for CCG community partners who are making this course such a 'hands-on' learning experience: Judith Garcia (EFNEP Educator with the Union County Cooperative Extension) and Neely Griggs (HungerCorps VISTA) are two of our biggest supporters who will offer their talents and expertise in the area of planting, harvesting, preparing and eating seasonal foods! 10 undergraduate students signed-up to be a part of our first event this semester. Cooking on a Dime is a 6-session program focused on nutrition and wellness education, cooking demonstrations, and eating on a budget. We had our first meeting last night in the Northeast Kitchen and made chicken salad. Students who graduate from the program will receive a certificate and a whole bag of kitchen goodies to help them continue cooking

Lyceum Overview:

Come join in a panel of speakers on the social, economic, and ecological benefits of tiny home communities on wheels. Jewel Pearson, who is doing the work of changing and challenging the status quo of housing and community will speak about her work as a tiny house advocate and community leader. She is a long time member and leader in the moveable tiny home movement and will be speaking about the benefits of tiny home living, the way tiny homes on wheels can help the economic and social health of rural communities, and barriers she is encountering to this up and coming movement.

Joining in this panel discussion will be Dr. Joseph Ellis in the WU political science department and Franco McGhee a long time member of the political community in Monroe. Students will explore sustainability, changing political zoning laws and social norms that either help or hinder the establishment of moveable tiny home communities.

Neely Griggs, the current HungerCorps VISTA member at the CCG, and Hannah Frasier, a former HungerCorps VISTA at the CCG, will discuss the life of a VISTA, what they do, VISTA benefits, and how VISTA members impact communities across the United States.

The Innovators' Studio 2022 had it's first workshop Friday afternoon, February 11. That afternoon, a small group of faculty and staff met to discover the first stage of design thinking, identifying a problem. Participants discovered that not all problems have a real solution, that some problems can't solved directly but that can be solved by reframing (Anchor Problems), some that can't be solved at all (Gravity Problems), and that some are primed for a design thinking solution. Participants will meet again on March 4 to discover the magic of ideation.

Research Assistants from the Psychology Department's P.U.P.P.Y. Lab (Directed by Candy Lapan) attended the Monroe Parks and Recreation Center's MLK Celebration at the Winchester Community Center. Students did craft projects with children and gave away free snacks provided by Heart for Monroe. Some children also participated in a brief psychology study on iPads aimed at understanding how children learn from different sources. For more information about fun studies from the P.U.P.P.Y. Lab, you can check out their website. They offer virtual and face to face studies for children between 3 and 12 years of age.

The first workshop of the CCG Service-Learning and Community Engagement (SLCE) Fellowship series was held this past month. This years fellows Dr. Christi Dewale (Sports Management) and Dr. Shea Watts (Religion & Philosophy) completed the Service-Learning (SL) 101 workshop to learn the basics of how we define SL. They made quick work of the content and aced their SL game session! Throughout the semester, they will learn more about how to design SL courses, how to build relationships with community partners, and how to turn their pedagogy into scholarship.
