Bates School Handbook
Spotlight on vacations and travel...
Please reference page 11 of our Bates School handbook for the following information:
FAMILY VACATIONS AND TRAVEL:
Parents and students are reminded that the MA state law requires compulsory attendance for all students. We strongly discourage family vacations and travel when school is in session. In addition to compromising the attendance law, family vacations interrupt the educational process in ways that make-up work cannot reverse. Teachers are not required to provide homework assignments prior to a family vacation or travel and students who are absent due to family trips will not be given schoolwork because such absences are considered unexcused.
Allowing students to miss school sends a very strong message to your child that school is not that important. That is not a message we want to convey to Salem students. Students who are absent at the time when the state or national standardized tests are administered will be allowed to make up missed tests to the extent that scheduled makeup time is available and consistent with state law and regulations.
Social/Emotional Learning
From Ms. Amanda, Student Adjustment Counselor
When we talked about self-control a couple of week ago, we were sure to let students know that having self control can be *hard*. Not just for kids. And we recognize it’s “on us” to help teach strategies for developing these skills, so that’s just what we did. Ask your young person to share with you what “strategies” they remember learning with Ms. Smith and Ms. Amanda on the announcements…Classes discussed and practiced the following strategies in morning meetings and throughout the week:
Finger-tip breathing (a sensory strategy) is a press and release tool for squeezing out extra energy or feelings into each fingertip and thumb while breathing in and out.
T.H.I.N.K. (a thinking strategy) is a self monitoring tool to use before we speak. We can ask if what we are about to say is: TRUE, HELPFUL, IMPORTANT, NECESSARY and KIND, before speaking to slow ourselves down and prevent ourselves from saying something we regret.
Consider prompting your child to use these strategies or model them for your child at home too! This week, we continue to talk about being safe at school. Exercising self control can certainly help keep us safe!
Important Reminders!
