In-Person Learning
We continue to plan for the return to full in-person learning on Monday, March 22, 2021. We have been able to adjust scheduling (in order to provide the necessary social distancing for lunch) such that high school students in the Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) who selected the “In-Person” learning model will attend in-person five days per week, beginning on the March 22, 2021.
The high school plan and the new bell schedule that will be utilized are below. This new bell schedule will be utilized by all students - both in-person and remote.
As a reminder, this plan does not impact students who chose the remote learning model; those students will continue to learn remotely through the end of the school year.
Several important pieces of information were communicated at a recent BOE meeting regarding the return for all secondary students:
- Maintaining 3-6 feet of space will not be possible in every situation. Staff will be working to arrange spaces throughout the building (including classrooms) to maximize the amount of space between students.
- Proper masking will become increasingly important when distance can't be maintained. During the BOE meeting, there was a lot of talk from JCDHE and SMSD about double masking. While it is not mandatory, it was recommended.
- Other mitigating efforts will continue throughout the building - classroom seating charts, classroom cleaning/sanitization, frequent/proper hand hygiene, limiting students in the bathroom, etc.

NEWS & UPDATES FROM SM NORTH
A note from the Nurse's Office
Attention all students and parents:
We are beginning the exclusion process for those students who have not had their state required immunizations. We’ve checked all the Missouri and Kansas Databases and that leaves us with several students who are NONCOMPLIANT.
Everyone who needs a vaccine has been emailed 3 times as a gentle reminder to get their immunizations up to date. Please help us update your immunization records, if you’ve received an email. We are not excluding remote learners from class participation from home. But they are not allowed on campus for any reason – sports clinics, computer help etc. They will not be able to attend school on the first day next year until we receive proper documentation of their vaccinations.
If you have any questions about this please call us at 913-993-6916 or 913-993-6907. Thank you all!

Athletic Update
Bowling: This last week, the Girls Varsity Team traveled to Wichita, Kansas for the KSHSAA 6A State Championship Tournament. While the ladies didn’t bowl as well as they wanted to, we still left with Alyssa Williams taking the 20th individual medal for her 560 series. Way to go Alyssa! A lot of parents and Dr. Higgins traveled down as well to cheer on the ladies! What a way to end the season!
The varsity boys’ basketball team had a solid showing in KSHSAA post-season action. The Tribe rolled the #1 seed KC-Harmon, 54-41. They were led by Jeremiah Manning and James Shepherd with 11 points each. Next up on the slate was #3 seed, Shawnee Mission Northwest Cougars. The team hung tough the first half, but hot-shooting and solid defense from NW changed the course of the game and North lost 40-66. We were led by James Shepherd with 17 points.
To say it’s been an interesting year thus far is an understatement. A sincere, thank you to our coaches, sponsors and game management staff! We couldn’t host the events without you and your willingness to assist us with all the game and time changes. If you get the opportunity please thank our colleagues that coach, sponsor, game manage and/or supervise our athletic teams. Although these are paid positions the time commitment is huge! Parents and family members, we also thank you for your patience and for coming to our games and supporting all of our athletes.
We have a number of athletes who have received post-season honors; we will release that information soon.
Spring Sports Update:
The first week of spring sports season practices was awesome – the weather cooperated, and everyone was able to get outside and enjoy the sport they love. Our coaches and athletes are committed and eager for a great spring season. We begin competition the week of March 15.
Live Eligibility - The athletic department practices live eligibility via skyward reports daily. Please check on the status of your students grades to ensure he/she is passing five of seven classes to compete.
SAVE THE DATE
· Wednesday, May 5 NLI Athletic signing for all athletes in the Aux Gym @ 3:00pm
· North Relays, Friday, May 7
Notes from the Athletic Director
Live Eligibility - The athletic department practices live eligibility via skyward reports. A friendly reminder our student-athletes must be passing 5 courses in order to participate in competitions.
Dual Participation Athlete (JJ) – If your student is interested in participating in two after-school activities please complete the DUAL ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION CONTRACT and schedule a meeting with both coaches and the athletic director.
Return to Play Update
The district has made the decision to change the doctors allowed to release students from COVID Return to Play to only MD, PO and APRN; DC and PA-C will be removed, as they do not have the ability to perform cardiac assessments.
KSHSAA Guidelines Return to Play
