A Note from Your Principals
Thank you for all you did in the month of September to make the transition back to school a smooth and positive one for your family and child(ren). As we head into the beginning of October and settle into a normal learning routine, we wanted to remind you that your child's regular attendance at school is crucial to their success!
As we shared in our communication last week, our Eli Terry attendance team reviews attendance/tardy data monthly and plans for tiered interventions when students are considered "chronically absent" (missing 10% or more of the school days offered). We wanted to take an opportunity to highlight some of the take-aways from this month's data review:
- In the month of September, our 490 students collectively had an attendance rate of 96% - exceeding our goal of 95%!
- Currently 38 of our students (7.7%) are considered "chronically absent" having missed 2 or more days of school last month - ET, the district, and the state aim to have this consistently below 5%.
- Kindergarten & Grade 2 have the highest number of students (8 each) flagging as "chronically absent". Kindergarten also had the lowest percent of students present each day with an average of 95%
- Grade 5 has the lowest number of students (3) flagging. They also had the highest percent of students present each day with an average of 98%.
- Currently 75 of our students (15%) have at least one tardy; meaning they arrived to school after our 8:45AM start time.
We fully recognize that children get sick and appreciate the proactive steps each family takes to keep their child(ren) and our school community healthy and well. Often it's the "sick days" coupled with "avoidable absences" that cause a child to become "chronically absent".
When we talk about considering attendance for your child, we're asking you to consider the "avoidable" absences such as the ones that result from a long-weekend, planned vacation, scheduling of "well-visit" doctor appointments, or a late start that might result in a day home. Research shows that even when children have missed school for good reasons, too many absences can cause them to fall behind.
Our team here at Eli Terry is ready and willing to support students and families who may be considered "chronically absent". Do not hesitate to reach out if we can support your family in any way.
And just a friendly reminder that Monday is a planned absence for everyone in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day!
Visitor Check-in Procedures
One of our biggest responsibilities each day to ensure the safety of our 490+ students. As a result, we want to share our visitor check-in procedures.
If you are visiting Eli Terry, whether for a PPT meeting, volunteering, or another reason, you will be required to check-in with the Main Office, produce a photograph ID (state ID or driver's license), and adhere to the procedures outlined below:
- Buzz into the Main Office and sign-in on the "Visitors" clipboard.
- Provide a photograph ID (state ID or driver’s license) to a member of the Main Office team.
- This ID will be scanned by Raptor, an electronic visitor tracking system that allows the district to track visitors and protect our school community from people who may present a danger to students and staff.
- Visitors will then have a photograph taken for a visitor's badge (that must be worn for the duration of their visit).
- Return to the office at the end of your visit to sign-out and discard your visitor's badge.
Thank you for your attention to this procedure. Working together we can ensure our students are safe, happy, and learning at school!
Unity Day
October 18th is Unity Day across our nation.
Unity Day is a day where we ask our children and all people to wear orange in solidarity in order to represent our commitment to treating people with kindness.
Unity Day was started by a group of parents of special needs children who were being bullied back in 2000. They continued their mission through educating non-special education students and parents about their children’s disabilities. Later, in 2005 they decided to span their philosophy to all children. They started the PACERKidsAgainstBullying.org.
We here at Eli Terry and district wide have adopted this concept to unify us as a community, even as far as involving our community resources to join the force of wearing orange. So please show your support by wearing orange and having your child wear orange on Unity Day this October 18th. If you or your child do not own any orange clothing or accessories, we will provide an orange scottie dog to wear if your child so chooses.
This year we will have each student sign a pledge against bullying and treating people with respect. Grades 3 through 5 will also have a special presentation by InteractTV which will focus on problem solving and standing up for yourself in a healthy way.

**Submissions Needed** - Veteran's Day Assembly
It is time to prepare for our Veterans Day Assembly on November 10th, 2023!!
To help honor our veterans, we are collecting pictures of veterans from, or related to Eli Terry Families for a Veterans Day slideshow.
If you would like to send in a picture of a veteran in your family, please complete the Google Form below and upload your picture. The DEADLINE for picture submission is NOVEMBER 3rd.
You may submit more than one person, but please complete a separate form for each individual.

2023-24 PTO Family Directory
A HUGE thank you to our PTO and Darla Jarvis for compiling our 2023-24 Student/Family Directory and for those families who were willing to share their contact information. This resource will help Eli Terry students and families connect with one another and foster the communication and relationships that are key to a wonderful school community.

In our newsletter last week, we highlighted how classrooms are integrating the RULER skill of “R-Recognizing” emotions but did you know that in order for us to do this first skill successfully (even as adults!), we need to have an “Emotions Matter” mindset?
Having an “Emotions Matter” mindset means we recognize that our emotions (both positive and negative) are powerful, as they guide us throughout our day and can influence the feelings of those around us. Individuals with an “Emotions Matter” mindset also recognize and acknowledge the different scenarios in which pleasant and unpleasant emotions can be helpful.
Here is one way you can begin to foster your own “Emotions Matter Mindset”:
Take a moment to read the quote below, often attributed to renowned poet Maya Angelou:
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Consider what these words mean to you. What’s the first thought or person that comes to your mind?
This quote may have reminded you of a situation you’ve experienced. While you may not remember the small details about the situation, you most likely remember how you felt.
These words echo the idea that emotions matter. We have the ability to impact how those around us feel through our actions, words, and decisions. It is important for ALL of us to have an “Emotions Matter” mindset; bringing awareness to how emotions influence our personal and professional lives throughout each day, and how they guide our thoughts and interactions with others!

Upcoming PTO Events
Eli Terry PTO is excited to announce they will be hosting their 2nd Annual Trunk or Treat! Let’s bring our enthusiasm and imaginations alive again to create a fun and safe trick or treating event for our kiddos. This will be hosted in the Eli Terry Parking Lot October 27th. Decorating trunks will commence at 6:00 and Trunk treating will begin at 6:45 and end at 8:30. This event is for ET students and their siblings only. Registration will be required for ALL participation (trick or treating included). We have 50 spots open for trunks and they will fill up fast, so please see the flyer and the QR code for registration.
As you reflect upon the past week, is there someone in the Eli Terry school community that deserves a "shout out"?
- Maybe an ET neighbor who watched your child at the bus stop so you could get to work early?
- Maybe an ET student who was a buddy to your child on the bus or during recess?
- Or maybe an ET staff member who you feel went above and beyond?
