East Hills Bucket Fillers
At the start of every school year, East Hills Elementary School social worker Stephanie Liebowitz visits all the second-grade classrooms to introduce herself to students and read them the book, "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" The story, which emphasizes kindness, empathy, and compassion, teaches students that everyone has an invisible bucket, which can be filled for each other by doing or saying kind things. They also learn the practice of bucket dipping—which is taking away good feelings and good thoughts or making someone feel bad. To encourage students to think about ways they can be bucket fillers, not dippers, both in school and at home, each child receives a paper bucket and is tasked with coming up with three ways to be bucket fillers. The completed buckets are then hung in the main hallway to share their ideas of how to be a bucket filler.
Literary Pumpkins at Harbor Hill
Ms. Kaplan's third-grade students brought their favorite book characters to life by embellishing pumpkins to mimic these characters. Over the last two weeks, students collaborated with their partners to thoughtfully plan and craft their pumpkin creations. The lesson fostered their ability to apply insights from their current reading unit— centered on character traits—and prompted them to choose especially robust traits for describing their pumpkin book characters.

Their mission extended beyond personal discovery, as they were charged with crafting a presentation, complete with a photograph, to show their peers. The captivating posters they produced will soon be on display in the Roslyn Middle School library, inviting other grades to explore and appreciate these rich ancestral stories.

RHS Earns Place on AP School Honor Roll
Roslyn High School has earned a place on the College Board's AP School Honor Roll for the 2022-23 school year. The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools that have done outstanding work to welcome more students into AP courses and support them on the path to college success. Research shows that students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to attend college and graduate on time. The students who enter four-year colleges with credit from AP accelerate their path to graduation and build confidence for college success. Even for those who don’t earn college credit, AP coursework provides early exposure to college-level work and contributes to a college-going school culture.
