Happy September! We had a wonderful first full week of school. Our students are diving into the new ELA Benchmark Curriculum and each of our classrooms is becoming a "Community of Readers"; it's an incredible thing to witness. It was a week full of fun and learning, but I'm sure your students will love the extra day at home with you this weekend!

A Note from Nurse Dana
Nurse Dana will be starting vision and hearing screenings on Pre-K students, Kindergarten students that were not screened last year, all 1st grade students, and any new students to SMCPS. Screenings will be conducted over the next few months as time permits.
Vision and hearing screening is a relatively short process. Screenings are not diagnostic, but instead are used to identify a child at risk for vision and/or hearing problems. Regular examinations are recommended by a health or eye care professional as needed. Vision/hearing problems that go undetected can interfere with learning and impact the health and well-being of children into adulthood.
The results of your child's screening will be sent home after all screenings are completed. A student whose parent(s)/legal guardian(s) objects in writing to hearing and vision screening, on the basis of the tenets and practice of a recognized church or religious denomination of which the student is an adherent or member, may not be required to take these screenings. Please contact Nurse Dana if you have any questions (dmlowien@smcps.org).
Also, please report communicable diseases when you submit absence reporting! Thank you!

Thank you for supporting our school - we are grateful for our amazing school community!Duke Maker Space is gearing up to come back this school year 2023-2024 !! But we need you. We need volunteers to commit to volunteering 1 day a week for the school year. You would come in during lunch and make a cool project with students. Times rotate every 2 weeks from 1045-1145 and then 1145-115. If you cannot commit to a designated day, maybe you would like to be a sub and jump in when someone can’t make it.
Maker Space is a wonderful opportunity for our students. We are hoping to kick off in October.
What is a Makerspace?
- Makerspace is a chance to try something new within the model of "Make, Test, Innovate, and Excel".
- A recess option for first through fifth grades.
- Students are given a monthly challenge.
Examples of challenges
- Quick building games.
- Problem solving with legos.
- Creating circuits.
- Quick building games.
- Building creations with recyclables and even learning to weave.
Parent volunteers present challenges, keep time and assist with troubleshooting.
If you are interested in getting involved with our Duke Makerspace and are available midday one day a week, please contact Amanda Calloway at amandaandjosh@me.com. You have to be a registered volunteer with the school so please get registered.
Duke's Military and Family Life Counseling Program
Captain Walter Francis Duke is excited to have the MFLC program to provide continued support to
active-duty military students and families. The Military and Family Life Counseling Program helps
military families and children navigate challenges by providing free confidential non-medical counseling services to children and youth via formal groups, lunch bunches and individually. Military and Family Life Counselors provide support to assist students with improving behaviors, performance in school and relationships. Military and Family Life Counselors provide support on topics such as feelings identification, bullying, self-esteem problem solving and deployment and reunification. Military and Family Life Counselors provide consultation support to parents, teachers, and administrators, conduct classroom observations, and participate in school wide events.
Cafeteria Info (& Menu Changes)
Click here for the Menu. Due to supply chain issues, menu changes occur. We recognize that the decision to bring lunch from home or purchase lunch from school is often dependent on the menu.
[Current] Menu Changes for this week:
- 9/5 ~9/8 Cheese Pizza Lunchable will be available
- 9/5 Apple sauce (sub for Peach cup)
Max Cheese sticks & Breakfast Pizza ( sub for Britto)
Snacks ($1.00-$1.50) will be available for students in grades 3-5 starting on Tuesday September 5th. Ice cream will be sold on Thursdays this year.
Duke Band, Chorus and Strings
We are happy to have the opportunity to offer Chorus, Band, and Strings music instruction to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students at Duke.
- Chorus (singing/voice) is open to all interested 4th and 5th grade students. Chorus singers will meet once a week for 45 minutes. (DUKE Chorus program info)
- Band instruction begins in 4th and 5th grades and is offered for the following instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and percussion/bells. Band will meet twice a week for 45 minutes. (DUKE Strings program info)
- Strings instruction begins in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, and is offered for the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, string bass. Strings will meet twice a week for 45 minutes. (DUKE Band program info and enrollment form)
Students may participate in either band or strings, but not both. However, Band and Strings students can also participate in the elementary school Chorus program.
We hope that you will take time to seriously consider this matter. Participating in a musical ensemble and/or learning to play a musical instrument can be one of your child's most cherished learning experiences.
Band and Strings instruction will begin during the third week of September. The online enrollment form is due by Friday, September 8th.
If you have any questions, contact Dr. Alvey (Chorus & Strings) at blalvey@smcps.org, or Mr. Romano (Band) at ppromano@smcps.org .
