An important message from WUS
November 30, 2021
Dear Wayland Union Schools Community,
Today, we share our deepest sympathy and support for the students, staff and families of Oxford Community Schools. We cannot begin to imagine the pain the Oxford community feels this evening following the active shooter incident reported today at Oxford High School, which caused at least three fatalities and additional injuries. Our hearts are heavy as we think of such an experience. Our prayers are with those who are grieving and who are recovering from injuries.
While it is unknown what prompted the shooting, and not for us to speculate, we want to extend ways to seek help to those experiencing distress. Wayland Union Schools, and others across our state, participate in the OK2Say program. Additionally, there are several mental health resources designed to support a variety of mental health needs, which may be experienced by people of all ages. We encourage our students, families and community to use these resources when needed.
For families looking for assistance on how to talk with children about today’s events, you may find the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) website to be a helpful starting point. Non-specific safety conversations may be more appropriate for younger students and may begin with presentations such as those found on the Johns Hopkins site for K-2 grade and 3-5 grade safety in schools.
Our thoughts and support are with the Oxford High School and the entire Oxford Community. We will keep them close in our hearts and minds as they grieve and recover from this horrendous experience. Thinking of you and our Wayland Union Community as we cherish each other and hold our loved ones close.
In partnership for our students and families,
Dr. Christina Hinds
Wayland Union Schools Superintendent
