HMS News
Greetings from HMS!
HMS traded in its traditional red for pink on Friday, October 27, for what has become an annual event for our Ambassador Club . . . Pink Day!
Raising both money and awareness for those dealing with breast cancer, the Ambassadors organized an incredible spirit day and were able to collect over $1,800.00 in just one day!
In addition to that, our grade eight students, led by Mrs. Driscoll conducted a supply drive for local troops currently stationed overseas. In just a few short days they were able to collect and organize boxes and boxes of important items that will be greatly appreciated by those serving.
We are very proud of our school community's spirit, their generosity, and their compassion!
HMS is Here to Help!
We understand that making ends meet can be difficult for some families in our HPS community. Therefore, we want to let you know that there are individuals in each of our schools who are ready to provide information and assistance. Resources may be available to help families in times of financial need, or other challenging situations. Our particular area of outreach at this time is for food support for the upcoming holidays.
Please don’t hesitate to contact an administrator, the school nurse, or counseling personnel in your
child's school if you are in need of food support for the holidays. Rest assured that your request will be managed in a way that respects your rights for confidentiality.
It's All Greek to Me!
Students in Ms. Nelson's classes are focusing on their Greek and Latin root study. Here, two students are matching roots with a picture which illustrates each root's meaning. Students also are learning how to connect the meaning with a gesture or a sign using American Sign Language.
One Book, One School Day
As you already know, this year as part of our annual HMS One Book, One School initiative, all members of our school community read the book Linked by Gordon Korman over the summer.
As has been our practice for the last several years, in order to deepen our understanding of the central themes of the book, on Wednesday, November 1st, we will be dedicating our day to activities, lessons, and discussions around the themes of this novel. On that note, we are looking forward to welcoming Holocaust survivor, Marion Blumenthal Lazan, for a virtual presentation.
For more information about the One Book, One School selection, Linked, you may wish to review the attached family discussion guide previously shared with students on their summer reading note-taking templates.
For more information about Marion Lazan’s personal story and information about her memoir, Four Perfect Pebbles, please visit the attached author page. If you wish to order a copy of her memoir, information can be found in the accompanying attachment.

If purchasing a shirt is currently an economic hardship for your family, please reach out to an HMS staff member that you feel comfortable approaching, and we will ensure your child receives a shirt.

Homework Help!
- Our LMC is open from 2:00 to 3:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, offering a quiet place for students to get an independent start on their homework before they come home to you.
- We run a Homework Clubs for Sixth graders on Tuesdays and a separate one for seventh and eight graders on Thursdays. These clubs are run by teachers who are able to provide general assistance to students as needed.
- We want families to set reasonable expectations at home when it comes to homework. If a student has worked diligently for 20 minutes on an assignment, and you feel they have done all that they reasonable can, please have your child stop work on that assignment and send a message to the teacher letting them know. Students will not be penalized for incomplete work if this is the case, but the teacher must hear from a parent.
We hope this information is helpful to you and your family!

SEPAC Liaison Open Position
We are still in need of a parent/caregiver to be a liaison between the PTO and SEPAC boards. Ideally, the person would have working knowledge of special education (e.g., have a child on an IEP or 504 or who receives special education services). However, any parent/caregiver with a keen interest in the provision of special education within Hingham schools is encouraged to step forward and take on this liaison role.
This is a light-touch role with a time commitment of about an hour each month. While there is no requirement to attend PTO or SEPAC meetings, the liaison is a valued member of both boards and plays a key role in relaying relevant special education information between the HMS PTO and SEPAC boards. It's a great opportunity to advocate for our students and engage with SEPAC liaisons from other Hingham schools.
Please reach out to HinghamSepac@gmail.com if you are interested or have questions.
Next PTO Meeting
Our next PTO meeting will be held via Zoom (details to follow) on Thursday, November 16th, 7-8pm. All are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!
