Southfield Public Schools celebrates Black History Month to honor the contributions of African Americans and people of African descent to U.S. and World History. Among the prominent figures such as Madam C.J. Walker, who was the first U.S. woman to become a self-made millionaire; and George Washington Carver, who derived nearly 300 products from the peanut; Black History has also been attributed to African Americans who have called Southfield their home as well. Some even attended Southfield Public Schools and walked similar paths and streets as our students today.

Thompson's Green Team started growing a garden using four hydroponics tables. The team planted two varieties of lettuce, jalapenos, green peppers, and tomatoes. The team has harvested lettuce and looks forward to having monthly salad parties.

The Green Team is responsible for recycling around the school and for the 80-gallon chinook salmon tank. 125 eggs were placed in the tank on November 18th. The salmon will be released in early May.

The Green Team consists of students grades 3-8th grade.

The United Way for Southeastern Michigan has funded the Stevenson Elementary School Makerspace (STEM) learning environment which was revealed on February 2, 2023.

The new Makerspace will provide a hands-on, creative way to encourage our scholars to design, experiment, build, and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering, and tinkering.

A makerspace is not solely a science lab, woodshop, computer lab or art room, but it may contain elements found in all of these familiar spaces. This space has been designed to accommodate a wide range of activities, tools, and materials.

Last weekend 5 juniors from University High School Academy attended the BEYA (Black Engineering Youth Association) conference with DAPCEP. They participated in various sessions learning about engineering, coding, and robotics. They also visited the D.C. African American Museum.

MacArthur K-8 University Academy's mission is to engage students in high-quality learning experiences, teach students personal and civic responsibility, and inspire students to be enthusiastic and independent learners.

MacArthur K- 8 University Academy is a school of choice. Housing approximately 550 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, MacArthur is well known for its strong curriculum emphasizing Math, Science, and Technology.

Levey S.T.E.A.M. Middle School

The mission of Glenn Levey Middle School is for all students to successfully learn to the best of their ability in an environment conducive to social, intellectual, and personal development.

Offering "The BEST of Both Worlds," including courses in S.T.E.M. = Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics AND Visual and Performing Arts.

The U application window is open for new students joining in the fall of 2023 for rising grades 6-11. The application window closes Friday, February 24, 2023.
