What is the purpose and history of the Evening of Excellence?

This event was created to recognize senior scholarship winners from local donors. We also recognize students in leadership, athletic signings and performance plans for college.

Who should attend?

Anyone is invited to attend but scholarship winners and recognized groups will receive a mailed invitation to attend. Parents and families are encouraged to attend as well.

DEADLINE to report scholarships in order for this information to be included in the senior graduation program is: Friday, May20th.

Seniors, we need to know your plans for next year and a few other important details.

Please answer your feedback form no later than May 23.

Students can spend a week this summer at OSU-Cascades! Summer Academy introduces students to life on a college campus, and they'll earn a scholarship doing it. Your students will meet new friends while exploring their academic and career interests with university professors and experts.

After a morning of classes, students get out there with daily outdoor recreation trips led by recreation staff and some of the best tour companies in Central Oregon. Activities include hiking, paddling, floating the river, rock climbing, and more.

Students planning to attend MHCC in the fall should apply to MHCC's general application here. Students will receive an MHCC ID#. (If you are a College Now student, you already have an ID# but you still need to do the application to update your status.)

Let the College & Career Center know your plan and we will send your transcript to start placement steps for you.

What should you be doing now?

1. Visit colleges!! Go online to college websites and set up an in-person visit on campus.

2. Create your activities chart/resume. You will need these for all your applications. Sample

3. Research schools on Schoolinks.com or College Board's Big Future. Go here for help.

4. Save photos and documents to use in your scholarship applications.

5. Spend some time researching careers on Schoolinks and Big Future, too. Go here for help.

6. Create a calendar of important dates so you don't forget them.

Juniors, if you have a 3.5 GPA or above and are considering PSU, plan to attend PSU's Viking Scholars event on Tuesday, May 24th from 6:30-8:15pm. By doing so, you will receive a $1000 scholarship when you enroll at PSU.

This is a great event and is the perfect way to learn more about what kind of a college setting is right for you.

Mark your calendars!

The PSAT/NMSQT will be offered at Barlow on Wednesday, Oct. 12th 7:30-12:00. This is a once-per-year test for sophomores and juniors. The test is the National Merit Scholars Qualifying Test for juniors.

The Oregon legislature has made an even larger commitment to our state's students and their education. The Oregon Promise now has the following changes for this year's graduates:

• The minimum award has been increased from $1000 to $2000.
• The minimum GPA has been lowered from 2.5 to 2.0.
• The $50/term co-pay has been eliminated resulting in more accessible funds for students.

Has your senior completed their Oregon Promise application? Have they submitted their FAFSA or ORSAA, too? These funds can be used at any Oregon community college for a wide variety of classes and training for future employment opportunities.

Completing these applications could provide between $2000-$8000 to students.

The deadline to apply is June 1, 2022. This is a ONE TIME only opportunity.

Wednesday, May 18th 4:00pm @ Oregon Tech's Portland Metro Campus

Each year, Oregon Tech students showcase their work at the annual IdeaFest. Student projects focus on innovative technologies, business solutions, and scientific and health advancements. The projects challenge students by developing hands-on experience with real-world problems and issues. This year we are combining this with an open house that highlights many of our programs, labs, and facilities.

GPA – Earn a minimum, cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above.

Income – Demonstrate unmet financial need. Applicants with family income up to $95,000. Last year's cohort of new college scholarship recipients had a median family income of approximately $35,000.

There is BIG news for students from Oregon who are a registered member of an Oregon tribe.

Funds will be made available to help these students cover the Cost of Attendance at Oregon colleges. Watch for completion of this grant process at the Oregon Student Aid website. Learn more here. Applications will be available in May.

It's the year-end event Oregon students have come to love most: Oregon STEM Week! With 25+ sessions about everything from cows to cosmetology, earwax to engineering, coffee to construction, maps to manufacturing, photography to pyrogeography...this week has it ALL!

This year Oregon STEM Week also has dedicated tracks for Elementary, Middle, and High students, making the session selection process as easy as 1 click, AND is free and open for all to join! Educators can register their classes for sessions, students can hand-pick whichever sessions interest them most, or both.

This is the last big event of the school year, so share these Oregon STEM Week sessions with students, fellow educators and colleagues so they can join, too!

We are conducting a series of trade apprenticeship education classes for our advanced woods and metals students. They have the opportunity to learn about construction trade apprenticeships, the benefits of union and non-union journeymen careers, and listen to guest speakers from the IBEW (electrician union), Union 290 ( plumbers/ HVAC, pipe fitters), and NW College of Construction (6 different non-union trade apprenticeships). Students are taught tips on how to create a trades resume, how to interview well, and what to do while waiting to be hired as an apprentice. This valuable series can help students prepare to enter a career in the trades.

Our area is booming with construction. Experts predict that this boom is not going to slow down anytime soon. That means construction companies are looking for qualified workers!

We have invited guest speakers in the trades to help students learn more about "Earn as You Learn Careers." This series is available on Wednesdays during 3rd period in the library.

Check out our Jobs Listing board, summer jobs, and part-time jobs being posted all the time. Work experience is helpful when added to trades, scholarship, and college applications. Make friends, connections, and money at the same time. Be sure to ask for a letter of recommendation after you have worked for 3-4 months. Keep it tucked away for future use. Check out Jobs Here.

If you have no job experience and want a letter of recommendation to add to your application giving you more value than the next applicant, take my Job Skills Training. Complete the quiz at the end (score of 25/30 or better) and email LindaLee that you are qualified for your letter.

This 2-week summer business institute is for historically-excluded high school students. Summer Business Institute offers an exhilarating opportunity to explore the business field and experience campus life.

Students will meet with local business leaders, engage in college-level coursework, build relationships with their peers and mentors, and compete in a Shark-tank style pitch competition.

Hospitality + Culinary Career Day @ Hyatt Regency Portland (Wed, May 25, 9-11:45 AM IN PERSON): Explore careers in the tourism, hospitality, and culinary industries with a behind-the-scenes look at one of Oregon's premier hotels. Students will talk with professionals, enjoy hands-on learning in the state-of-the-art kitchen, and learn about turning your first job into a well-paying career in food, sales, finance, tourism, and more. KGW News Career Day (Thursday, May 26, 9:15 AM to 11:30 AM IN PERSON): Students will go behind the scenes at KGW studios and explore the news set and control room. They will hear from industry professionals what it's like to cover the local news and work in a studio environment. They will also learn about getting started, developing skills, and turning their first job into a great career. Sign up here.
