We are proud to celebrate School Board Appreciation Week Jan. 24-30 and honor board members for their commitment to Cheatham County and its students. This year’s theme is “School Boards: Envisioning the Future.” Our board members devote hours of their time to provide leadership for our school district, and we appreciate the work they do to improve public education for everyone. Cheatham County School Board members are Christina Gilliam (first district); John Patrick (second district); Tim Ray (third district); James Gupton (fourth district); vice chairman John Louallen (fifth district); and chairman David Risner (sixth district). If you see them this week, please let them know how much they are appreciated!

We are excited to present our 2020 Annual Report. The report, now in its third year, showcases the accomplishments and successes of our district. The second semester is off to a successful start, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we navigated the all-virtual learning schedule the first two weeks of the semester. Our elementary schools and Riverside Academy are back on the traditional schedule and our middle and high schools are on the hybrid schedule. It is our hope to be able to transition back to the traditional schedule for our middle schools on Monday, Feb. 1 and for our high schools in mid-February. However, we will continue to closely watch the active number of COVID-19 cases, both in Cheatham County and in the Cheatham County School District, as we make that decision. Students who opted for the all-virtual learning model for the second semester will remain virtual.

We continue to rollout ID badges for those students who ride our buses. Before winter break, students in the north cluster started to receive their badges, and students in the central and south clusters started receiving their badges last week. Students must now use these badges (which have a barcode) to scan on and off the bus. The badges serve as an added security measure and to verify when a student gets on and off a bus and where. We thank our transportation department for their hard work in implementing this important program.

Cpl. Jesse James, the School Resource Officer at Cheatham County Central High School, has been invited by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office to participate in a “Talking Traffic Safety” Facebook Live program on Wednesday, Jan. 27. This is a great opportunity for Cpl. James and we are proud that is representing the Cheatham County School District.

We are happy to announce a new partnership with the United Way of Greater Nashville. As a result of this partnership, Carol Henegar has joined our team as a family coach and Katelyn Binkley will serve as a family engagement specialist through the United Way’s The Family Collective initiative. We invite you to meet both women and learn how they will be helping our families by clicking on their names here (Henegar and Binkley).

Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 2, all of our schools will be offering an after-school tutoring program. Teachers will be available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-4:45 p.m. Transportation will be provided for students who stay after school. Our schools will be communicating additional information with our families. We encourage you to take advantage of this new opportunity.

National School Counseling Week is Feb. 1-5. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, the week focuses public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors across the United States and how students are different as a result of what counselors do. The week highlights the tremendous impact counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Our school counselors are:

One Generation Away, working in conjunction with local churches, will host a FREE food distribution on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 9-11 a.m. at Ashland City Elementary STEM Academy, 108 Elizabeth St. in Ashland City. This is open to all families in our community and will operate as a first-come, first-serve drive-thru distribution. Everyone is asked to stay in their vehicle and have space cleared for the food. We appreciate One Generation Away and our local churches for helping our families in these challenging times.

We want to give a huge shout out to our School Nutrition Department! These dedicated and hard-working employees have done an outstanding job this year providing meals for our students while our schools have operated on the traditional, hybrid or virtual learning models. The department is now hiring. Specifically, we have openings at our schools in the central cluster and at Sycamore High School (pictured above). We want to remind our families that there will be an early dismissal day on Friday, Feb. 12. Lunch will be served to our students, and school will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m. Our teachers will participate in professional development in the afternoon. Additionally, our schools and the central office will be closed on Monday, Feb. 15 for Presidents Day.
