Weekly Inspiration
Enjoy this short message about part of Stephen Covey's book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People"
Listening is Key to Communication
I'm not going to lie, the weekly inspiration video was a reminder I needed for myself so I figured I'd share it with you as well. During recent conversations both personally and professionally, I found myself planning my response while other people were talking rather than truly engaging in active listening and seeking to understand.
Stress and a feeling that I have too much to do and not enough time are often culprits for my ineffective listening practices. I have had to remind myself to pause and get my mind right before engaging in a conversation where someone is seeking to communicate something important with me.
I've also found myself asking what people are wanting to get out of a conversation... are you seeking a conversation to work towards a solution, are you looking to vent and don't really want to discuss the situation, are you wanting to propose an idea, etc.? This question has been especially helpful as my role as a wife - one I constantly need improvement in - but it also helps professionally. Seeking to undestand what someone is hoping to get out of a conversation helps reach the end goal of the communication.
I know this is something most if not all of you already know, but sometimes we all just need a little reminder. Let's spend this week trying to be the best listeners for our students, each other, and our families.

Cardinal Recognitions
Thank You To:
- Sam Hanley, Vivian Leach, and everyone who helped with picture retakes and senior portraits last week. We appreciate your support so that all students have the opportunity to be represented in the yearbook.
- Mrs. Richardson for hosting our first fall choir concert this past week. Our students did a great job showcasing their talents and positively representing the performing arts at SHS.
- Mr. Weimer and Mr. Morse for organizing our first required bus evacuation drill before school on Thursday. The drill went off without any issues and all students were back in the building without any disruption to class time.
- All staff members who helped run a successful active intruder drill on Friday.
- The Art Department, Counseling Office, and Instructional Coaches for hosting the September staff breakfast on Friday. The coffee and donuts were very much appreciated!
