Black Leaders During the Civil Rights Movement
Thurgood Marshall (pictured right)
Thurgood Marshall became a lawyer and fought for social justice as the staff lawyer of the NAACP. His most famous case was Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954), where Marshall successfully argued that educational facilities that separated students by race were not equal. This wasn’t the only time Marshall would take on the highest court in the land in pursuit of justice. In fact, Marshall argued and won more cases before the Supreme Court than anyone else in American history. Eventually, Marshall’s position in the courtroom shifted from the courtroom floor to the judge’s seat. Thurgood Marshall became the first Black Supreme Court Justice in the US, gaining a reputation for expanding civil rights and protecting the American people from systems of oppression.
Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist who played a major role in the equality of Blacks and Whites in America. One of her many commitments to trying to provide equality for everyone was refusing to move to the back of a bus to let a white individual sit. Through her strong involvement in the community, she gained these titles from the United States Congress called: “the first lady of civil rights” and “the mother of the freedom movement”.
Malcolm X
Malcolm X was an African-American Muslim Minister and an African-American human rights activist. He preached self-worth to the community of Blacks in America and tried to teach many to reflect on where they came from and what they have accomplished, while also teaching them to love themselves and appreciate who they are and what they have.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr was an African-American Baptist Minister and an African-American civil rights leader. Through his impeccable leading style and powerful messages to the world, he single-handedly enacted a major change in the minds of political leaders, which gave way to African-Americans gaining more rights in America. A very famous quote made by him was, “I have a dream”; which was the name of his well-known speech that helped changed the face of America today.
Mapping with Mrs. D'Aloia!
Students in Mrs D'Aloia/Mrs Fox's class used a school map to find a special surprise on the learning steps. X marks the spot!
Problem Solving in Second Grade
Mrs. Ronayne helped second grade with problem solving! Students learned tips and tricks to identify the size of the problem and how to ask for help.
Student Medication Important Reminders
Any medication a student may need to take during the school day MUST be dropped off by an adult with doctor's orders and in packaging with your child's prescription information. Please DO NOT send in any medication with your child in his/her backpack or lunch box (This includes inhalers and EPI pens.)
Experts on Animals
Mrs. Edgar’ and Mrs. Frack's kindergarten classes chose an animal and are listening and recording facts about their chosen animal. The students are researching to learn more facts for their writing and to become "experts" on their animals.

Birthday/Holiday Treats
Due to the many students with allergies and food reactions food items to celebrate student birthdays are not permitted. We are requesting that all birthday recognitions be non-food based. We do want to acknowledge student birthdays but encourage families to do so in other ways. For example, small items such as pencils or stickers for classmates or the donation of a book to the school or classroom library in honor of a child’s birthday would be appropriate. Thank you for honoring and respecting this request.
Holiday celebrations will be held in compliance with School Board Policy #246 Student Wellness. The policy states “The district recognizes that classroom parties and celebrations are a tradition at school. School staff and parents/guardians are encouraged to include healthy food offerings, as defined in this policy, at school parties and events to support a healthy environment throughout the district.” Policy 246 can be viewed in its entirety by visiting the district’s website.
Holiday celebrations and end-of-year classroom celebrations will be announced in advance for parents to be prepared in determining food choices with their children. Birthday celebrations are held randomly and do not allow for parent awareness prior to the event in the school setting, which contributed to the decision for birthday recognitions to be non-food based.
