PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello Bobcat Families,
As we close out the second week of school I want to share some highlights of greatness we have achieved. We achieved 94% overall student attendance this week which is really close to our school goal. We had over 40 students receive shout outs from their teachers for representing bobcat character traits we are teaching each day. Our bobcat volleyball team had their first game and victory this week and represented Bedichek Pride on and off of the court. Looking forward to seeing more achievements throughout the year.
I also want to share that we conducted two safety drills today during their advisory class. We practiced a lockdown drill and an evacuation drill today. The students were taught the process of each drill and completed each successfully.
Remember that attendance is critical to ensure student success. Make sure to reach out to the attendance office if your child is unable to attend school. In addition, remember all students are expected to be in Bedichek standardized dress code. Please see the website for more information.
Parent volunteers are needed on campus to serve on the community advisory council and the PTA. Please reach out if you are interested in serving on either or both of these committees. We meet once a month shortly after school to discuss school systems and events.
I look forward to meeting each of you next week at Back to School night on Wednesday, August 30th from 5:30 - 7:00 where you will be able to meet and greet with all of your child's teachers.
Thank you for all of your support.
Angela Atkinson

New State Mandates Regarding School Safety and Discipline
1. Last spring, the Texas Legislature passed a new law, HB 3, requiring all Texas school districts to have at least one armed security officer at every campus during school hours.
Austin ISD is NOT considering arming teachers or other district employees outside of Austin ISD Police Department to comply with the law.
We are planning to hire more than 70 new SROβs to cover all 78 elementary campuses, plus associated support staff, to meet the new requirements.
The board is required to approve the required number of SROs per campus. They are anticipated to adopt this plan at their August 31 voting meeting.
2. A new state law, HB 114, mandates that ALL e-cigarettes (THC and Tobacco) are prohibited at or near public schools and school events.
House Bill 114 requires a student to be placed in the District Alternative Education Program (DAEP) if the student possesses, uses, is under the influence of, sells, gives, or delivers marijuana, THC, or an e-cigarette while on campus, within 300 feet of school property, or at a school-related event.
Under Austin ISD guidelines, this is a 20-day DAEP placement.
3. To further our efforts to protect students from firearms, and as a courtesy to our families, Austin ISD is informing families of the legal obligations to protect minors from negligent gun storage.
Texas State Law 46.13 indicates that a person commits an offense if a child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm and the person with criminal negligence: failed to secure the firearm; or left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access.
Campus Safety Measures
If you see any dangerous situation for our campus please call 911 or you may call our Austin ISD Police dispatch at 512-414-1703.
