St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 4 | WEEK 9 | 7 DECEMBER 2023
“Dear Lord, on Thanksgiving Day, we bow our hearts to You in prayer.
We give You thanks for all You have done, mostly for the gift of Jesus Christ, Your Son.
For beauty in nature, in which we see Your Glory, for joy and health, friends, and family.
For our daily sustenance, Your mercy and care, these are the blessings You kindly share.
So today we offer this response of praise with a promise to follow You all of our days.
Amen.”
Dear Parents and Carers
Our school year has rapidly come to an end. It has been a very busy term and we are now down to the second last day. Please find attached to the newsletter, the 2024 staffing list. However, the staff list could still change before Term 1 in 2024 due to staff movement.
Please note, we are sourcing a quote for installation of evaporative air conditioning in the school undercover area for 2024 and expected installation date is around March.
I would like to thank the school community for the support shown last Friday night for the student Carols Night. There was a huge turn out and the students sang beautifully thanks to the efforts of Mrs McDonald. It was a wonderful community night and finish to the end of the school year.
The St. Columba’s staff are also to be acknowledged for their hard work and commitment to our students throughout 2023. Many hours outside of school hours are given by the staff in preparing lessons for the students. Congratulations to all students for their efforts and achievements over the year. These endeavours will be reflected in the students’ reports. The school Advisory Council and P&F are to be commended and thanked for the work they have put into supporting the school community throughout 2023.
A special thank you to the office staff Mrs Venturini, Mrs Creek, Mrs Foster and Mrs Griffin who are the quiet achievers with the amount of work they manage to get through in a week.
Thank you to the many volunteers who have helped with school activities throughout the year. Your help is very much appreciated. It is this help and involvement that gives St. Columba’s such a great community spirit. A special thank you must go to Justine Palandri and the regular volunteers in the canteen who work very hard with providing meals in the canteen each week. I know how much your assistance is welcomed by the staff and the school community.
This year we farewell Mrs Ogg, Mrs Seaber and Mrs Barth. We thank them for their hard work and professionalism while at St Columba’s and wish them well with their future endeavours. In 2024 we welcome new staff member, Miss Kellie Dibben and welcome back from maternity leave Mrs Van der Bijl and Mrs Brine. A big thank you to Mrs Vuckovic for taking on the role of Assistant Principal in Term 1. I know they will be made most welcome by the St Columba’s School Community.
All the best to our Year 6 students as they move to high school and I am sure that they will settle smoothly into high school life.
Many thanks go to Monsignor O’Loughlin and Mr Yock for organising our end of year Thanksgiving Mass. It was a very moving occasion with the announcement of the student leaders for 2024 and the hand over from the 2023 student leaders to the 2024 student leaders. A big thank you to all the parents and carers who made time to attend the Mass.

Thanksgiving Mass
Today we celebrated the 2023 school year with a final Thanksgiving Mass for Years 1-6. This was a time for the school to come together as a faith community for the last time in 2023. We said farewell to those leaving us and commemorated the year with a video compilation of all the year levels from Pre-Kindy to Year Six. What a beautiful way to finish out a wonderful year as we prepare for the birth of Christ at Christmas.
Sacramental Dates 2024
Please find the Sacramental dates for 2024 in the attachment below.
This includes the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation.
The Season of Advent
Advent comes from the Latin word meaning "coming." Jesus is coming, and Advent is intended to be a season of preparation for His arrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended to be a period of preparation, much like Lent. Prayer, penance and fasting are appropriate during this season.
Advent is not as strict as Lent, and there are no rules for fasting, but it is meant to be a period of self-preparation. The purple colour associated with Advent is also the colour of penance. The faithful should receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
At Mass last Sunday, the first Advent candle was lit. The second candle, also purple, represents faith. It is called the “Bethlehem Candle” as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. The colour of the second Advent candle is associated with royalty and reminds us that Christ is the "King of Kings." We await the coming of a new king from Bethlehem.
