Mahalo to everyone who attended our Ho`olaule`a on Friday, October 6. All of our students were MAGNIFICENT in their performances. We are very grateful for everyone’s kindness and respect to each other and to our students. It truly was a magical day that will live in our hearts for many years to come.

Some of our students participated in The North Shore Menehune Surf Contest on October 14th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd in Hale'iwa. Congratulations to our Menehune surfers and their proud supporters!

During the Fall Break, Journey performed a fire dance at his cousin's birthday party. It was impressive! Journey learned the techniques and skills involved in twirling the fire staff when he was about 6 years old from his dad's friend, who is a professional fire dancer at Polynesian Cultural Center. When asked if he ever got burned, Journey said that once when he was twirling the fire stick above his head, a few strands of his hair burned. Thankfully, he has never gotten hurt. Journey says, "Don't do a fire dance unless someone trains you!" (click on photo to see a video of Journey's fire dance)

October was National Bullying Prevention Month. We wore the color orange on Wednesday, October 18, to show that we are all United for Kindness, Acceptance and Aloha. Mahalo for showing your support. Everyone deserves to be safe in school, online, and in the community ... not only on Unity Day but every day.

The preschoolers and kindergarten students went to see the Hawaii Theater for Youth performance called "Under the Blue". The show is about a girl named Emily and her magical journey into the depths of the ocean. She meets sea creatures that live in each level of the ocean and learns about the importance of taking care our environment.

The first graders had a great learning experience at Kumu's Learning Center! The students learned what lo'i, kalo, and canoe plants are. They had an adventure in the lo'i, played Makahiki games, sampled kalo and ulu, and did the "Ono Stuff" dance.

The fourth graders visited Loko Ea Fishpond where they studied the ecosystems of how the pond is designed to help the fish live and survive. The students used their engineering skills to build their own Pu'uhonua, or place of refuge for the native fishes. Students brought their own materials which they thought could be useful and durable to build a Puʻuhonua. Their challenge was to use both recyclable and natural materials. They also did some hands-on "hana", or work, by helping to remove an invasive grass that grows over the fishpond. By doing this, they are helping the fishes stay happy and healthy!

• Gr. 4 - Justina A: our upper grade top reader (1,120 minutes)

• Gr. 2 - Reef O: our lower-grade top reader (745 minutes)

• Gr. 5 - Kyrie F: our upper-grade random drawing winner

• Gr. 2 - Rebecca E-B: our lower-grade random drawing winner

Congratulations to the 5th graders! They were the grade level with the highest percentage of readers (87%) for our Reading Journeys Quarter 1 Challenge.

Our Quarter 2 Reading Challenge is from Oct. 7 - Dec. 21, 2023.

Back in September, the rope and clips were stolen from our flagpole. We are grateful to our State Facilities workers and Mr. Pai for replacing the metal pulley system, rope, and flag clips last Friday so that the Honor Guards can now raise and lower our flags again.

Every year, the flu creates a burden on the health and well-being of children and their families.

This contagious respiratory illness caused by the Influenza virus known to many as “The Flu,” puts children at a greater risk for complications much more than the common cold. At greater risk for serious complications from the flu are children under 2 and 5 years of age, and children with chronic medical conditions like asthma and diabetes. Healthy children 5 years and older are not at higher risk for serious complications themselves - they can, however, spread the flu to vulnerable groups like infants younger than 6 months, kupuna older than 65 years of age, and people of all ages with chronic medical conditions.

We can help protect vulnerable people at higher risk for serious complications from the flu

(including hospitalizations) by getting our flu shots. The flu vaccine gives our school community the best protection from these known potential serious complications.

Haleiwa Elementary is offering a flu clinic on campus on Thursday, November 16th from 0830-1030 am for parents interested in getting their students vaccinated against the Flu this season.

To participate in our Flu Clinic, please download and fill out the consent form below. Then, turn in all completed forms to the school office.

Our Winter Fest will be on Wednesday, November 29 from 3:00 to 5:00pm. See Santa Claus, play some games, and enjoy fun activities. Our Scholastic Book Fair will be from Monday, November 27 to Friday, December 1. We hope you will be able to do some shopping at our book fair, too!
