Hoover Elementary School News
October 2023
Dear Parents/Guardians,
October is a busy month at Hoover. This month students will be completing the beginning of the year screening Acadience assessments in Reading and Math. The teachers use these screening assessments to determine the strengths and needs of each student in their classroom. The results of these assessments will be shared with you at conferences in November.
Also this month, there are numerous events and activities occurring during the day for students, A few of these special events are featured in this newsletter so be sure to check out the details below.
Thank you for sharing your child with us.

Leader in Me - Practicing the 7 Habits at Home
Focus and act on what you can control and influence instead of what you can’t.
Habit #1 Means:
- I am in charge of the choices I make.
- I can react to things happening around me, like a soda bottle fizzing over, or I can Be Proactive and choose my mood and attitude.
- I can do the things I need to do without being asked by my teacher or parent.
This month, sit down with your family and use the questions on the worksheet below to brainstorm how you can apply Habit 1 in your family!
Lion PRIDE UPDATES
Lion PRIDE School Store
Thank you to everyone who has donated items for our PBIS School Store! Teachers are reinforcing all the positive Lion PRIDE they see in students. The students are enjoying spending and saving their 10-Frames for things they want to purchase. Thank you for helping us reinforce Lion PRIDE in our students here at Hoover. Check out the donations button below and please consider making a donation to our school store!
Lion PRIDE in the Community
The Lion PRIDE at-home calendars are due Monday, October 16. Here's the link to the most recent calendar that was sent home:

We show Lion PRIDE everywhere we go! When an adult recognizes your child for showing Lion PRIDE at home or in the community, the student should color in the pawprint for that day. If students return their calendars with at least 10 of the 14 days’ paw prints colored, they will receive FIVE extra stamps on their 10-frame which means they will have more stamps to go shopping in the school store! Check out the Parent/Guardian letter regarding Lion PRIDE in the community!
Counselor's Corner
Unity Day is held annually on the 3rd Wednesday of October. Hoover students are encouraged to wear orange to show a united front for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion, and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying.
Your help is needed to make Unity Day a success! Please use the link below to sign up as a volunteer on Unity Day.

Wear ORANGE:
On October 18th, all students, staff, and volunteers are encouraged to wear orange in celebration of Unity Day.
Mix it Up at School Events:
On Unity Day, these events will highlight the importance of diversity, inclusion, and kindness, while providing a fun opportunity for students to interact with new (or old) friends.
- Mix it Up at Recess Event (K): Students will be mixed up to play games together at recess
- Mix it Up at Lunch Event (1st and 2nd): students will be mixed up to sit together during lunch
In guidance classes, kindergarten and first-grade classes are wrapping up their beginning-of-the-year Lion PRIDE lessons. Next, we will move on to exploring emotions and coping skills to help us when we have unpleasant feelings. The 2nd graders are finishing up a unit on coping skills. They will begin discussing positive friendship skills and conflict-resolution strategies.
Hoover Fun Run is coming!
This is a fun event promoting healthy active lifestyles. Parents/Guardians will be permitted to watch and cheer during this event from the designated spectator section along Dickinson Avenue and Deanhurst Avenue. There will be cones and yellow caution tape designating this cheering area.
Fall Parties
News from the PTO
The Camp Hill Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (CHEPTO) is dedicated to serving Hoover, Eisenhower, and Lion Academy learners and their families, grades K-5. CHEPTO raises funds to support school activities and organizes events for our families to enjoy together, including Fall Fest, May Fair, and roller skating parties.
As we gear up for the 2023-2024 school year, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved! We are looking for volunteers and are forming several subcommittees, which will offer more chances to have input and make an impact. Our ability to continue to offer programming and other events relies on help from volunteers. Without your help, we'll need to drastically cut back on what we can do.
Here is an example of what the CHEPTO helps pay for:
—Field trips
—Assemblies
—Teacher appreciation meals
—Teacher reimbursement grants
—Roller skating parties
—PSSA muffins
—Treats for Fun/Field Days
—5th-grade shirts and celebrations
If you are interested in sharing your time, money, or talents to support the organization, or just want to learn more about us, join us for our next regular meeting on Tuesday, October 11, at 6:30 PM in the Eisenhower library.
Free babysitting will be provided. Hope to see you there!
