The Chestnut Square Post
July 2015
The Month in Review
We also kicked off Prairie Adventure Camp in June. Kids in pioneer clothing are scampering all over the grounds, living the life of an 1880's settler to Collin County! On any given day, you may see children churning butter, playing on stilts, or making a pie. Nowhere else can your child travel through time at a camp!
There is always something happening at Chestnut Square! It's so much fun, it's HISTORIC!

Volunteer Spotlight
Leslie James
I came to Chestnut Square three years ago and volunteered to do “light housecleaning”. The exercise is beneficial and I have the historical artifacts all to myself.
My volunteer experiences soon expanded to:
Tea Server- I see the pleasure on patrons faces as they partake in teas at the Bevel House. They admire the china patterns and reminisce about a more genteel time. For a moment, they get to live it.
Butter churner- When the kids received a soda cracker spread with hand-made butter, it brings me back to my childhood. It was pure contentment to nibble on soda crackers spread with butter.
Goat tender- I’ve always liked animals, but growing up in the city, I never had experience with goats. They are so clever and rambunctious. They like to stop under the persimmon tree and be hand-fed a leaf or two.
There are always small adventures and dedicated people to meet at Chestnut Square. At the same time I can revere history and give back to the community I proudly call home!
Chester's Corner
Chester is deeply concerned about his beloved Faires House! The oldest home in McKinney, the Faires House was built in 1854 and is frequently used for living history events, tours, and school field trips. One of our most popular demonstrations, Dutch Oven cooking, is located at the Faires House because of its large and beautiful fireplace. Unfortunately, this fireplace is suffering the effects of the aging process and needs "a few nips and tucks!" Help us save the Faires House fireplace!
