GPISD Parent Newsletter
KEEPING YOU CONNECTED...
The Galena Park Independent School District values our students and parents. You are an essential piece to our puzzle and we are looking forward to serving you.
As a District, we will share reminders, updates, and successes monthly in an effort to keep you connected.
Thank you for taking the time to stay connected!
Superintendent's Message
A famous person once said, “Elections have consequences.” The point being made was officials who are elected to represent us and the passage of laws we are asked to follow are determined by a majority of citizens who choose to participate in the voting process.
Galena Park ISD encourages our community and employees to exercise their rights to participate in the civic process. Registering to vote provides you with an opportunity to voice your opinion. Unfortunately, many registered voters choose to remain silent by not taking the next step and actually casting their ballot on Election Day.
While it is quite common to complain about less than stellar elected officials or unjust laws, we all have an opportunity to elect qualified representation and/or rebuke injustice, but only if we vote. Exercise your rights, speak loudly as a citizen. Remember, “Your vote is your voice!”
Respectfully,
Angi M. Williams, Ed.D.
Do you ever wonder how we prepare for school closures?
Attendance Matters!
Galena Park ISD believes student attendance should always be a top priority, so we are excited to announce the start of our Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow campaign while celebrating School Priority Month in October!
When students miss school, they miss out! Your child’s daily, on-time attendance is critical to their success in school. And while some challenges to your child’s school attendance are unavoidable, it’s important to understand the impact of each absence. Did you know a student is considered chronically absent if they miss only two days of school per month (18 days in a year), whether the absences are excused or unexcused? Research from AbsencesAddUp.org shows that even one year with chronic absences can cause a child to fall behind academically and decrease their chances of graduating from high school.
The good news? Attending school every day increases a child’s chances of success in school and in life! As a parent, you can prepare your child for a lifetime of success by making regular school attendance a priority. By figuring out the reasons for your child’s absences and taking advantage of district support services, you can help set your child on the path to success!
Be sure to follow Galena Park ISD throughout the year on Twitter and Facebook for weekly messages, and be on the lookout for more information in each month’s parent newsletter. Remember, students who Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow. Don’t let absences add up.
Congratulations to our Summer Graduates!
Congratulations!

Principal's Month
In honor of Principals Month, Galena Park ISD would like to recognize our 26 principals for their hard work and dedication!
Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared October 2018 to be Principals Month and acknowledged all elementary, middle and high school principals for setting the academic tone for their schools and working collaboratively with teachers to set high curriculum standards for students.
“As school leaders, principals are entrusted with our most valuable resource- the children of this great state,” said Governor Abbott.
GPISD would like to thank our principals for everything they do!

We Love Our Volunteers
On Friday, September 14, Mrs. Aidaded “Ida” Rocha, Galena Park ISD volunteer, was recognized in Austin for being selected as a 2018 Heroes for Children honoree by the State Board of Education!
The Heroes for Children award recognized 15 honorees for their volunteerism in the public schools in their community. Rocha received a plaque recognizing her service to Galena Park ISD, and her name is also engraved on a permanent display at the Texas Education Agency.
After Hurricane Harvey devastated our area, Rocha created an “Adopt a Child” initiative, which coordinates with social service workers to help students whose families are facing financial hardship. This initiative provides students with clothes, shoes, glasses and registration fees for activities
.
Galena Park ISD would like to thank Ms. Rocha for her years of dedication to GPISD and congratulate her on winning this prestigious award!
Retired Educators
On Friday, September 21, Galena Park ISD hosted a retired educators’ luncheon to share all of the excellent things going on at GPISD schools this year.
Once a year, GPISD hosts the retired educators’ luncheon to thank retired educators for their instrumental work in our community and schools. Through their years and decades of dedication to GPISD, these retirees have helped shape the district into what it is today and continue to make a huge impact on the community. During the luncheon, they learned about exciting things that will happen during the 2018-2019 school year.
"This event is near and dear to my heart," said Charmaine Hines, retired educator. "It's so nice to remain apart of a school community that is progressive and keeps the community involved."
Many of the retired educators look forward to this event each year, because of the chance to catch up with colleagues they haven’t seen in a while.
We are so thankful to have the retired educators as apart of our family and are extremely grateful for their years at GPISD.
