PLTW Distinguished Schools 2021-22 School Year Honorees
HMC-1 is proud to announce that seven district schools have been recognized as a 2021-22 School Year Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished School. Compass, Dobbs, Ervin, Millennium, Truman, Warford, and Ruskin are seven of just 282 schools across the U.S. to receive this honor, thanks to their efforts of providing broad access to transformative learning opportunities for students through PLTW Launch.
The PLTW Distinguished School recognition honors schools committed to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. To be eligible for the designation, our schools had to have at least 75 percent of students participating in at least one PLTW Launch Module and had to offer at least one PLTW Launch Module in each grade (K-5) during the 2021-22 school year. And boy, did our schools deliver! Click here to read more about this recognition.
Five HMC-1 Schools Receive a Tremendous Honor from the Kansas City Health Department
Congratulations to not one, not two, but FIVE HMC-1 schools for receiving a tremendous honor from the Kansas City Health Department! Compass, Freda Markley, Truman, Warford, and the Hickman Campus (Smith-Hale, Millennium) all received the Kansas City Health Department 2022 Food Safety Excellence Award.
The Food Safety Excellence Award is only presented to those that have exhibited excellence in sanitation and food safety as well as evidence of successful employee education during the previous year – an achievement that is not obtained easily. Read more about this honor here.
Congratulations to our Two May Applause Applause Honorees!
Meet Ezekiel W., Applause Applause honoree from Freda Markley Early Childhood Education Center. He is an amazing young scholar with a big personality. He always greets anyone that enters the classrooms. He is able to make friends easily and maintain friendships. He is always willing to help both his peers and teachers, and so eager to learn and be at school. Thank you, Ezekiel, for your brightness!
Meet Rylee G, Applause Applause honoree from Millennium at Santa Fe Elementary. Rylee is a leader inside and outside of the classroom. She spearheaded the fundraiser ‘Genius Hour Project’ to support local animals at Wayside Waifs. She created a school wide fundraiser to collect dog and cat food, which included speaking to classes about her project, making flyers for the hallway and to send home, and announcements over the intercom. Her hard work and dedication resulted in collecting over 50 pounds of food for Wayside Waifs. Way to go, Rylee!

Project Lead the Way Showcase Event
Ruskin seniors were excited to participate in Project Lead the Way's (PLTW) annual Senior Showcase at Union Station. This event is the culmination of a student's four year journey with PLTW’s Engineering and Biomedical Science. As part of the showcase, students had a unique experience led by teachers Bethany Kelly and Todd Barney where the Biomed and Engineering students teamed up to work on their final project. This allowed for cross-content collaboration and diversity of both interest and expertise in projects.

Ruskin's Real World Learning Program Highlighted in Local Blog
Take a look at Ruskin’s Real World Learning (RWL) Program latest highlight!
Hickman Mills C-1 School District RWL program was recently featured on the ‘Getting Smart’ “Real World Learning in Action” blog post because, that's right, the program is that amazing.
HMC-1 is proud to offer RWL opportunities that take learning well beyond classroom walls, and provide students with the opportunity to work, create, and make a visible difference in a real world setting. Through the program, students are connected with hands-on learning experiences that allow them to explore a variety of career opportunities while earning credentials, completing internships, and connecting with industry partners.
Thanks to all of the dedicated staff, administrators, and partners, who make our RWL Program possible and accessible to our students. You can check out the blog post here.
