Remembrance Day Prayer
God our Father, your Son Jesus gave up His life to free us from the power of sin and death.
He showed us that the greatest love is in giving up one’s life for others.
On November 11th, we remember those who fought and died for our freedom. We ask you to bless and console them together with their families.
Help us to understand the sacrifices they made in leaving their loved ones to face the horrors of war. May we never forget their generosity.
May your Holy Spirit give us the courage to resist evil in all its forms and show us how to be peacemakers through prayer and action, lest we forget those who fought, suffered and died that we might have the freedom and peace we enjoy today.
Amen
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Father Daniel Zanon has been a busy place in the month of October. Sports and clubs have returned and we want to give a huge shout out to our staff and students for supporting and participating in these extra curricular opportunities. Cross Country, Junior Volleyball, Mental Health Champions, Youth Faith Ambassadors and ECO are just a few examples of the happenings at Zanon. Our junior boys and girls volleyball teams played in our Family of Schools Pod Tournament and represented out school well. We also had students participate in the Family Cross Country Meet and 2 students advanced to the Board Cross Country meet. We are very proud of all of our students!
As we look ahead to the month of November, we see many opportunities for quiet reflection and growth. The reverence that comes with Veteran's Week and Remembrance Day brings us a sense of deep gratitude for the service and sacrifice of those who fought for and continue to stand up for freedom and peace. We are reminded how blessed we are to live in a country where freedom is a way of life.
The recurring theme throughout November is one of “remembrance”. All Hallowed Eve gives way to All Saints Day and All Souls Day. We pause and reflect on those who we have known, loved and respected and who now are deceased. We will also look forward to Advent, the beginning of our new liturgical year. Advent will begin on Sunday December 1st
As we completed our Attitude of Gratitude challenge in the month of October, we were also reminded that we do have so much to be thankful for. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our families for participating in our Thanksgiving Food Drive. As well, through generous donations in support of our Halloween Spirit Week, over $150.00 was raised for ShareLife. Thank you to all the students, staff and parents who continue to make our school a wonderful, caring and loving community centered in Christ.
Together in Faith,
N. Podobnik

The Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations
The Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations
Catholic education views human life as an integration of body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in this vision, Catholic education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and academic quest. The expectations of Catholic graduates, therefore, are described not only in terms of knowledge and skills, but in terms of values, attitudes and actions. Vision of the Learner The Graduate is expected to be:
1. A discerning believer formed in the Catholic Faith community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery of God’s presence through word, sacrament, prayer, forgiveness, reflection and moral living.
2. An effective communicator who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of gospel values
3. A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good. 4. A self- directed, responsible, lifelong learner who develops and demonstrates their God -given potential.
5. A collaborative contributor who finds meaning, dignity and vocation in work which respects the rights of all and contributes to the common good.
6. A caring family member who attends to family, school, parish, and the wider community
7. A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of human life.
VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: CONSCIENCE
During the month of November, we will be focusing on the virtue of conscience. God has given us the ability to know the right and decent way to act and then to act that way. We trust that the com-mon Spirit we share inspires us and guides us to make good deci-sions if we allow our conscience to be well formed. A person of conscience allows prayer and scripture to influence him/her.
People of conscience:
• Feel right and wrong and pay attention
• Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit inside
• Choose to do what Jesus would do
• Know that followers of Jesus will have to make difficult choices
• Keep promises even when tempted to give up
• Can see how his/her actions may help or hurt others
• Admit their sins and feel badly about poor choices
• Say sorry and try to make up for hurtful actions
PAPAL PRAYER INTENTION FOR NOVEMBER
We pray that all parents who mourn the loss of a son or daughter find support in their community and receive peace and consolation from the Holy Spirit.

Catholic Education Week
The theme chosen for the upcoming 2025 Catholic Education Week is: Catholic Education: Pilgrims of Hope L’éducation catholique: Pèlerins de l’espérance.
“We must fan the flame of hope that has been given to us.” (Letter on the Jubilee Year of Hope, February 11, 2022)
The five sub themes for Catholic Education week explore ways to live out Pope Francis’ call for each one of us to be Pilgrims of Hope…
- by honouring human dignity / honorent la dignité humaine (Monday)
- by caring for creation / prennent soin de la création (Tuesday)
- by responding to the poverties in our world / luttent contre les pauvretés (Wednesday)
- by serving in solidarity / servent en solidarité (Thursday)
- by living as peacemakers / vivent en artisans de paix (Friday)
Catholic Education Week Prayer
Hope is our calling, O Lord,
and the destination of our pilgrim journeys.
As we mark this Jubilee Year of hope,
keep our eyes focused on Jesus,
and on the hope he reveals to us.
All our hope is in you, O God, in the name of Jesus
our Lord and companion.
Amen

TREATIES RECOGNITION WEEK
Treaties Recognition Week was introduced to recognize and understand the importance of treaty education and to help everyone in Ontario learn about treaties.
• Treaties are legal agreements made between two or more Nations.
• Treaty-making preceded North American settlement.
• Treaty outlines the terms, relationship and conditions of settlement in Indigenous Territories.
• Both Settler and Indigenous Nations have a responsibility for knowing and upholding the Treaty obligations.”
(The First Nations, Metis and Inuit Education of Ontario http://www.fnmieao.com/)
Ontario has designated the first week in November as Treaties Recognition Week to promote education and awareness about Treaties and Treaty relationships. All students, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, are enriched by learning about the histories, contributions and perspective of First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples in what we now call Canada. We are called to focus on raising awareness about Treaty relationships, promoting constructive engagement with First Nation communities and revitalizing Treaty relationships. Here at Fr. Daniel Zanon School, we acknowledge the Treaty relationship we have with the Mississauga’s of the Credit First Nation. In the spirit of and the intent of the “Dish With One Spoon” wampum agreement we pledge that we will collectively care for and respect the land, water, animals and each other by promoting land stewardship and protection of the sacredness of the environment.
Lest We Forget
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
-John McCrae
Remembrance Day Liturgy
Our Remembrance Day Liturgy will be taking place on Monday November 11th at 10:20 am in our school gymnasium. We will recognize the achievements and sacrifices of Canadians at home and overseas during past wars and peacekeeping operations around the world. Thank you to Mr. Shanahan and his class for all their efforts in preparing this opportunity.
All Saints/ All Souls Day
All Saints Day, celebrated on November 1st, reminds our community of those men and women (both known and unknown) who have lived faithful lives in the Church. On this day we remember our saints in our prayers and ask for their prayers and intercessions. The historical roots of this celebration have to do with those martyrs who died in the early Church. Later, Pope Gregory VII declared this day to be the date we remember all who lived and died for their faith.
All Souls Day, November 2nd, is a Roman Catholic day of remembrance for friends and loved ones who have passed away. The day purposely follows All Saints Day in order to shift the focus from those in heaven to those in purgatory. It is celebrated with masses and festivities in honor of the dead. While the Feast of All Saints is a day to remember the glories of Heaven and those there, the Feast of All Souls reminds us of our obligations to live holy lives and that there will be purification of the souls of those destined for Heaven.
Basket of Remembrance
In preparation for All Souls Day, we invite you and your family to complete a prayer card for loved ones that have passed in your family. Students will have the opportunity to add their prayer card to our Basket of Remembrance. Our Basket of Remembrance will be displayed in our foyer for the month of November. During the month of November we will remember and continue to pray for the loved ones we have lost.
Bullying Prevention and Awareness
Ontario has designated the week beginning on the third Sunday of November as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment. Bullying is defined as a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person's body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance.
Bullying can take different forms, these include
· Physical – hitting, shoving, stealing or damaging property
· Verbal – name calling, mocking, or making sexist, racist or homophobic comments
· Social – excluding others from a group or spreading gossip or rumours about them
· Electronic (commonly known as cyberbullying) – spreading rumours and hurtful comments through the use of cellphones, e-mail, text messaging and social networking sites
At Father Daniel Zanon Catholic Elementary School we work collaboratively and very hard to create and maintain a safe, caring, inclusive and healthy environment for all. We will kicking off a school wide focus of "Zanon - Where We All Belong" during Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week. As well, on Wednesday November 26th, we will be welcoming Brave Education. They will present in class sessions on Setting Healthy Boundaries for Gr. 1-3 and Bullying, Conflict and Relationships for Gr. 4-8.

School Trips and Program Enhancements
Students will have the opportunity to take field trips and participate in a number of extra-curricular activities. Permission forms will be sent home to be filled out, signed and promptly returned to school. Students will require written consent from their parent/guardian to participate. Verbal consent over the telephone will not be accepted. Staff will provide ample notice for trip consent forms. We encourage parents to support these educational opportunities by volunteering to assist and supervise these excursions. Please note - all volunteers require a valid criminal reference check.
Dress Code
This past June, the Dufferin-Peel school board reviewed the student dress code policies and implemented the following:
A dress code refers to the standard of student dress which is respectful of the dignity of the human person and inclusive. Parents are to ensure students are dressed in a manner which ensures that their torso and upper legs, to the mid-thigh, are not exposed.
In addition, the DPCDSB dress code will exclude any garments with messages containing or portraying any offensive and/or inappropriate content.
Members of the DPCDSB community will not be permitted to wear attire that promotes:
a) hate
b) discrimination
c) illegal activity
d) profanity
e) violence
f) political language
g) threats to health and safety
h) or content that contravenes the Ontario Human Rights Code.
Appropriate Dress - Cold Weather
The days are getting colder and pretty soon winter will arrive. It is important for students to come prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. We ask that students dress appropriately for colder weather by having coats, hats, scarves, boots and mittens or gloves. Please note that in the event of an emergency evacuation, students will not have the opportunity to put boots on. Thank you for your support in this matter.
Winter Weather
During the winter season, the school receives calls from concerned parents as to how we determine when children will or will not be allowed outside for recess. On extremely cold days, we limit the amount of time that students spend out of doors. We obtain our weather information from the Environment Canada Weather Information Line and follow School Board guidelines. With the exception of these occasions, all children will go out for outdoor times. We remind all students to dress appropriately for the weather.
Dogs on School Property
From 8:45 a.m.—3:30 p.m. dogs are not allowed on school property. This includes small dogs being carried. We thank you for being respectful of the fact that some students have a fear of dogs. We thank you for your continued support.

ALLERGY AWARENESS ALERT
Fr. Daniel Zanon School staff would appreciate the co-operation of the entire school community in NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain peanuts, nuts or any other life threatening allergens, which could potentially harm a child. We would like to keep all classrooms allergen-aware. In an effort to do so, any child that brings a lunch into the classroom that contains any life threatening allergens will eat their lunch in another location in the school designated for that specific purpose. Please make sure that all of your children’s caregivers are aware of this request. We understand that students enjoy celebrating special occasions with others in the classroom; however, to ensure everyone’s safety, the policy at Fr. Daniel Zanon School is that non-edible treats only will be permitted to be shared. There are many alternatives to bringing in food for birthdays and special occasions. Some suggestions are: stickers, gift certificates, erasers, dollar store items, pencils, etc. If you would like to discuss any other ideas, please talk to your child’s teacher or the school administration.
We look forward to your understanding and co-operation in making our school safe for all students.
Prevalent Medical Conditions and Forms
For any students who have medical issues requiring medication to be administered and stored at the school (e.g. epi-pens and puffers), please ensure the school has all the necessary forms and medication. As well, should your child receive a concussion, either at/away from school, please inform us. Physician authorization to return to school is now required. Required Physician forms are in the School Office. Please contact Ms. Santos if you have any questions.
Kiss and Ride
Please follow these guidelines when using the Kiss and Ride program at Father Daniel Zanon:
The Do’s:
- Families using the Kiss N’ Ride are reminded that children must be able to independently exit their cars to use the Kiss N’ Ride. Drivers are to remain in the driver’s seat and should never exit the vehicle to open doors or to retrieve items from the trunk of the vehicle. If this is not possible, we ask families to park their cars and walk their children to the school.
- Children are to exit the car in a safe and careful manner, with their backpacks ready to avoid a long wait time in the drop off lane. Children are to exit the vehicle on the right side of the car, onto the landing, for safety purposes and proceed to the school for entry.
- Children are to be dropped off or picked up, using the drop off lane between the hours of 8:45 – 9:00 am and at 3:30 pm. Due to the high volume of cars, and dependent on weather conditions, please consider arriving early.
- As cars enter the school driveway from the entrance, please proceed in a slow and cautious manner.
- Please take note of the bus loading/unloading designated area in the lane.
- If you are parking, you can proceed to the parking lot to park and walk your child(ren) to school. All traffic will flow in one direction. The drop off and pick up lane is directly in front of the school.
- Continue to move up and through the kiss and ride lane to the very top of the lane to drop off and pick up your children to facilitate a steady flow of traffic.
- Cars are to exit the driveway in a slow and cautious manner.
- Cars may park in the parking lot in available spaces only.
- If you are parking in the lot and walking your child to the school, please use care while walking through the parking lot to the school grounds.
The Dont’s:
- Do not park or leave your vehicle while in the Kiss and Ride Lane
- Do not double park or block cars in the parking lot
- Cars are not to enter the Kiss and Ride drop-off lane with any speed-they must proceed in a very slow and cautious manner.
- Please do not attempt to move into the drop-off lane from the drive thru lane passing others cars
Thank you for your anticipated and continued cooperation and support. The safety of all is our primary concern. We are confident that in working together we can have a very efficient and successful Kiss and Ride program
