Volume 3 Edition 5
Greetings Roosevelt H-TECH family!
As we enter our second semester of the school year, I would like to take the time to congratulate our leadership team, office staff, teachers, and students for the hard work and dedication exhibited during the fall semester. We made some remarkable strides and have some amazing stories to share of our accomplishments. In the upcoming months, we will continue our diligence to academic greatness. We will have Thursday After School Tutorials, TSI Saturdays, and weekly daily tutorials to bridge the gap and increase mastery! We have also created parent groups in Remind 101 to improve and increase our communication with the families of our students. Be on the lookout for more of our celebrations in this and upcoming newsletters.
We will continue to Gallop to Greatness with the support of our entire collaboration!

Roosevelt Swimmers Represent in Regional Waters
Collegiate students Lorena Cabrera, Samantha Fleenor, and Stephanie Cuadros, along with Roosevelt senior Jennifer Lopez, qualified for the North Texas Regional Swim Meet in the 200-yard Freestyle relay. They placed tenth with a time of 2:41.97. This was team best time and an eighteen second drop from their swim at the District meet just two weeks prior. Way to go Mustangs!

Education Opens Doors.....
Being a student at Roosevelt H-TECH means that you miss out on the four-year adjustment period that high school typically provides for college. For fourteen-year-old college freshmen, this is not always an easy feat. Education Opens Doors Roadmap to Success program is just what the scholars ordered to support in this audacious task. Once a week during M.A.P.S (Methods of Academic and Personal Success) class, students receive support in navigating high school and college while exploring & preparing for careers. Mrs. Jones, M.A.P.S educator, is enthusiastic and motivated about implementing these lessons and is confident that they will support in closing the gap of the soft skills necessary for success in college coursework.

The Doors of H-TECH Are Open
Each Thursday evening in January, the Roosevelt H-TECH opened its doors for interviews for rising eighth graders interested in becoming students in H-TECH’s fourth cohort. Our student leaders have taken the reigns by providing tours and interviewing our prospective students. This collaboration is giving our students ownership while making them an essential part of sustaining our school. Current H-TECH students/ambassadors always make our eighth-grade applicants feel comfortable during the interview process. We will continue conducting interviews each Thursday through March.

Celebrating Success, the Roosevelt H-TECH Way
Friday, January 18, 2019, the Collegiate faculty and staff honored their star students at the ‘Roosevelt H-TECH’s Third Six Weeks Awards Assembly. Scholars were rewarded for obtaining As and Bs in their fall semester college courses at El Centro College. The faculty presented certificates for ninety-eight As and sixty-three Bs. There was literally no room for all the students to stand on the stage!
Students received awards for exhibiting excellent character and showing grit in their high school courses during the third six weeks of the fall semester. This activity also showcased the musical talents of junior Jared Jones and sophomore Mya Morrison. Teachers, students, and our administrative team loved having an opportunity to celebrate the fruit of their fall semester labor. The freshman, sophomore, and junior classes also participated in the Mustang Circle Contest to determine which class has the most spirit. Our Junior Class of 2021 annihilated the competition. This activity was a huge success. All involved parties cannot wait until we celebrate our scholar’s success next six weeks.

Health Science Students Attend UT Southwestern January Exploring Post
On January 28, 2019, Roosevelt H-TECH health science students participated in the Exploring Post program sponsored by UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Exploring Post program is designed to help teenagers make educated decisions about their future by allowing them to gain practical experience in different career fields. Students meet once a month during the school year in the evenings on the campus of UT Southwestern. In addition to regular meetings, students are invited to take advantage of social activities put on by the Scouting Circle Ten Council. The Exploring Post adds a unique feature to our partnership UT Southwestern that will directly benefit the local community and attract young adults to our school who may be future students or employees.

Artifacts, Weather & Bones
One of Roosevelt H-TECH’s goals is to provide students with experiences and opportunities to educate them holistically. During the week of January fourteenth, approximately twenty-five H-TECH eleventh graders took a field trip to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and the African American Museum of Art’s Monticello: The Legacy of Slavery Exhibit. These two events were a reward to students who have successfully met the standard for Texas Success Initiative Mathematics college entrance exam.
At the Perot Museum, students had the opportunity to explore eleven halls and countless exhibits in both nature and science. Students also had tickets to watch Extreme Weather, a film about climate change. The film was cut short by an unexpected fire alarm sounding. This day was full of excitement and surprises.
Students also enjoyed the Monticello: The Legacy of Slavery Exhibit. This exhibit featured artifacts from Thomas Jefferson’s slave at Monticello. Students reported that it was an opportunity to see representation of what they learned in history classes about slavery. Though this field trip only lasted an hour, a lifetime of experiences was gained. Thank you to the Dallas ISD’s Office of Racial Equity for sponsoring our students.
