A Note from Martha...
Dear LISD Families,
It looked like everyone had such a great time at the Pumpkin Extravaganza on Tuesday evening. LIPTSA volunteers transformed the multi-purpose room into a festive fall space with plenty of pumpkins and room for pumpkin carving. Dinner was provided, and participants also got to decorate a paper skull for Dia de los Muertos. Big thanks to LIPTSA and to all who attended. Sometimes, we just need to get together and have fun!
Speaking of Halloween, LISD students don't dress up in costumes on this day. Elementary students are invited to wear pajamas or loungewear to school. There is a Halloween Trunk or Treat gathering in the heart of Lopez Village from 5:30-8:00 on Tuesday night. That's the time and place to wear costumes. Here is a Chamber of Commerce Link for more information. MPPACT, our school band, plays at 6:00.
The following Sunday, November 5, there is a Dia de los Muertos celebration at the Lopez Community Center for the Arts from noon - 3:00, sponsored by the Lopez Island Family Resource Center. Click THIS LINK to let the organizers know you are coming and order some delicious food.
These are two wonderful community events to celebrate this special time of year, and I hope to see lots of LISD families there :-)
Enjoy your weekend!
All my best,
Martha

Heritage Spanish students recreate and study a classic delight, the "Torta"
The "Torta", an emblematic Mexican sandwich, carries with it centuries of history, a fusion of cultures, and a powerful political chronicle. Originating in the colonial era, the Torta stands as a testament to Mexico's resilience. The rest of this article and more great content can be found here - in "Qué Onda" - a dedicated newsletter designed to highlight and share the activities achievements, and ongoing projects within the Spanish Department at Lopez High School. Really great info here.
Successful Trip to WWU
In early October, Jeanna Carter, along with chaperones Torres, Steinbreuck, and Booth, brought 32 students in grades 10-12 for tours of Western Washington University and Bellingham Technical College. They also met with admissions officers for admission sessions at both schools. WWU provided a free lunch to all the students and chaperones. Students reported they really enjoyed the experience.
Knife Sharpening - Appointments Available for Nov 10
School Chef John Shaw is offering knife sharpening service on Fridays. This service is a fundraiser for the school's LIFE (Lopez Island Farm Education) program.
The cost is $10 per person +$2/in per knife. So if you bring in three knives that are 6in long it would be $46 total.
Sharpening happens on Fridays, ideally you would drop them off in the morning and then John will have them done before 3pm. November 3 is already booked, but please email jshaw@lopezislandschool.org to get the next available slot.
