How to Become a Barber
A barber is as a person who shaves or trims the beard of a person; cuts, trims, shampoos, relaxes, curls, permanently waves, dresses, tints, bleaches, colors, arranges, or styles the hair of a person; massages the face and head of a person.
Barber Certification Requirements
A student must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) prior to enrolling into a program. Michigan law requires one to have completed or have an equivalent education as determined by the department, but not less than 17 years of age (proof of age must be provided), be of good moral character, demonstrate satisfactory completion of:
- Not less than an 1,800-hour course of study at a licensed barber college, and
- Pass an examination approved by the board and the department.

How to Become a Cosmetologist
A cosmetologist is an individual who renders, or offers to render, cosmetology services. Cosmetology services means one of the following services, or a combination of the following services:
- hair-care services
- skin-care services
- manicuring services
- electrology (cosmetologists must be separately licensed as an electrologist to render, or offer to render electrology services)
To become licensed as a cosmetologist in Michigan, an individual must be at least 17 years of age, be of good moral character, have an education equivalent to the completion of the ninth grade, have completed either:
- not less than1,500-hour course study in a licensed school of cosmetology,
- or have served as an apprentice for not less than two years in a licensed cosmetology establishment in which hair care services, skin care services and manicuring services are offered and have successfully passed an examination prescribed by the board and the department.
