TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL 6 ISSUE 21
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
There is no school this Monday in observation of Presidents Day. Growing up I remember my mother taking me to the voting booths. The first real memory I have of a president is Jimmy Carter. What I most remember as kid about Reagan was that he was responsible for a program that was called “Star Wars,” which at the time I clearly associated with the movie. By the time Bush senior took office I was more familiar with politics.
While Presidents Day is not a historically “celebrated” day (ie. parties, presents), I encourage you to watch a documentary, read a book, or research a president that you know nothing about. No matter which president, what party they belonged to, or their beliefs, almost all of them had interesting lives, adventures, and stories. I’m currently reading a book about Teddy Roosevelt after his presidency and its quite amazing. Its Black History Month as well, President Obama had one of the most interesting upbringings and his story is well documented.
Maybe one day an ex-OSES student will take office…

Principal

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Rodriguez
This was a fantastic week! Our students are continuing to work hard with the UFLI curriculum (Digraphs) such -wh -ph. Our students continue to work hard on writing and reading. In Science we are learning about the different forms of energy. Our students enjoyed learning the different kinds of energy and how they can be utilized. Our class is super excited to see what we are going to learn in the following weeks to come!
FIRST
Bayno
This week Ms. Bayno’s class had a blast during Valentine’s Day Exchange of Treats! Almost everyone brought something to share and just made their bags full of treats. “What an amazing day!” they said.
They also created Valentine’s crafts that we displayed on the Hallway and in our classroom.
ELA: We started Module 7, in this module our class will be learning about nature, and we will investigate how things in nature can change. We will read about different environments and observe the beauty of nature. Children will learn about interesting changes that occur, such as how the Grand Canyon formed and how the water cycle works. They will also write a poem about things they like in nature.
Math: We have started Topic 10 Add and Subtract with Numbers to 100, on this topic we will be focusing
focuses on adding and subtracting with numbers to 100. Kids will learn different tools and strategies to find answers. No matter which way of solving a problem is chosen, it is important that kids know how to explain the thinking behind it.
Science: As we continue working on our Science Project, we start learning more about Osmosis.
Thank you, so much dear parents, for all your support in all our school activities and class activities.
SECOND
Ms Coy
Have a wonderful 3-day weekend!
The students had a run time participating during the Fun Run last week. Thank you to everyone who donated from our classroom to the Boosterthon. Next week the students are able to dress down all week for surpassing our school goal.
This week, Ms. Coy’s class has been learning about using arrays to make repeated addition equations. The students completed a walk around the room array task this week. There were 20 different stations for the students to answer questions where they had to fill in the array, write the repeated addition equation, or pick the answer from multiple choices.
In Science, we reviewed force and motion with pendulum bowling for our STEM challenge. The students had to determine the amount of force that would be needed to knock down their “golf tees” bowling pins.
THIRD
Martin
We’ve had a great week in 3rd grade. We’ve been learning about fractions and text structure in non-fiction. We had a great celebration on valentine’s day, finding main idea about the history of the holiday and students completed their fractions pizza project where students created a pizza from many fractions.
Please remember to pay your $10 dollars on school pay for the UCF Engineering fair field trip.
FOURTH
Happy Long Weekend, 4th Grade Orcas! It’s President’s Day!
This week, OSES had 3rd Quarter Parent Conferences. We hope everyone could meet with their teacher and hear about the great things going on at the school. If you weren’t able to get a conference spot, the 4th grade team is committed to making sure your voice is heard. Please reach out to your classroom teacher with any questions via email and we will be happy to provide comprehensive replies. Recently, we had our first annual Boosterthon. Thank you to everyone who donated to make our school a better place to learn. As we met our school goal, all students may dress down each day next week.
Coming on February 29th (leap day!) is our annual Black History Night. This night is always a smash hit. Come join us and celebrate black history with a focus on influential women in black history. We hope to see everyone there. You won’t regret it!
In the classroom this week, Mr. Mateer’s class is starting to learn about adding and subtracting fractions. In addition, we’ve started investigating Earth’s structures in science. Ask your student about weathering vs erosion!
As always, thank you for being a parent for an OSES Orca,
The 4th Grade Team
FIFTH
Kaljulaid
This week in ELA students practiced a number of skills including grammatical, essay organization, cause and effect text structure. Students had the opportunity to dissect an expository essay and identifying all the necessary elements before putting their skills to the test in writing about their favorite book. Students also learned about causes and effects in text structure by reading about Thomas Jefferson and what caused him to write the Declaration of Independence!
This past weekend my two teams competed at the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition in Kissimmee. Our Division II team competed in Drive In Movie where they were tasked with creating a vehicle that moved independently. They used their incredible coding skills to control a lego robotic car that retrieved tickets and popcorn! Our Division I team competed in Rockin' World Detour where they were tasked with writing a song, creating an instrument, transporting the band to an alternate location (space), and creatively using baking soda. Both teams worked incredibly hard these last few months!
SPECIALS
Visual Art- Coates
This week in Art class second grade began their Amazing Treehouse drawings. As a class we watched an incredible video that showcased unique and amazing childlike treehouses then students began to brainstorm their own treehouses. Students used their imagination to create their own unique designs. Who wouldn’t want a roller coaster that takes you to and from your treehouse?? We talked about how to draw a tree and students also used a guided drawing sheet to help them. Next week they will color and complete their amazing treehouses!
STEM- Oconnor
This week in STEM we continued creating structures with paper. We talked about balance, shape, and architecture.
Physical Education- McAdams
Our mile kids.
Any student where the white marathon kids shirts have run over a marathon worth of miles.
SIXTH
English- Nemcik
In Mr. Nemcik‘s class we are learning about poetry and the impact of various poetic forms on meaning and style. The students have been learning to analyze poems through methodical examination of elements such as form (rhyme scheme, number of stanzas, etc.), word choice, imagery, and figurative language. One of our assignments this week was to work in groups to complete a SWIFT chart. A SWIFT chart is a graphic organizer which helps the reader organize their ideas as they analyze a given poem. For this exercise, each member of the team was tasked with analyzing one of the elements. Once all elements were listed, the team members discussed the tone and theme of the poem and then added it to their team’s poster as the finishing touch.
Ying Expo Science Fair
Nikhil Dereddy, Neela Jagmohan, Gagana Sajja and Reyansh Sane represented Orlando Science Middle School (Technology Campus) at the Ying Expo Science Fair on Thursday, February 15th. Congratulations to our orcas for making it this far. The awards will be announced on February 22nd.
Candy Crush Dance
Happy National Random Acts of Kindness Day (2/17). Do a kind act for others- it is a wonderful way to show our Orca Core Values!
Our Character Trait for February is Kindness. How do we treat those we care about? How about people we don’t know? An act of kindness can boost feelings of confidence, being in control, happiness, and optimism. Being kind to others, even those we do not know, may also encourage others to repeat the good deeds they have experienced themselves — contributing to a more positive community.
Try to complete this bingo card for a special prize from Ms. Knight!
Have a great weekend, Orcas!
