Tiger Tales from Sanborn School
January 30, 2023
Dear Sanborn Families,
Happy New Year! We hope that you and your family had an enjoyable winter break with friends and family. February is right around the corner and our students are engaged in wonderful learning activities each day. Congratulations to Mrs. Cortez's fourth grade class and Mrs. Gannon's second grade class for earning the December Golden Paw Award! They were treated to a fun game of BINGO last week. Both classrooms were following the Tiger Traits (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe) multiple times during the month of December. Way to go!
On January 10, we spent time as a school community reviewing the Tiger Traits at various locations around the school (hallway, classroom, bathroom, cafeteria) as a part of the January Station Rotation Refresher. Our staff participated in a meaningful half day Institute Day on January 11; which focused on our school behavior data and what we can do as a staff to respond to our student's needs. The staff also participated in meaningful differentiated Institute Day sessions on January 17 (K-5 math implementation, 6th grade science, music, art, PE sessions, and many more). These professional development sessions are valuable for our staff as we continue to learn and grow while meeting the needs of our students.
The next few months will be filled with lots of learning, and many different assessments for our students. This newsletter contains a lot of information about Sanborn and many upcoming district-wide events. Please take the time to register your child(ren) for next school year as early as possible (more information is below). If you have any questions or need support, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Warmly,
Kate Arenberg, Principal

Staff Highlight: Third Grade Team
In 3rd grade, it is very important for students to begin to practice and retain their multiplication math facts from 0-9. This is a building block that will help them tremendously in the upper grade levels as the math concepts begin to get more difficult. The first two units in math focused on multiplication. The 3rd graders are now on Unit 3 in math which focuses on 3-digit addition and subtraction. Though they have changed focus at school, it is still very important to get their multiplication fact practice at home. At school, the students practice their math facts in centers where they play a game using their facts. By the end of 3rd grade, students should either know their multiplication facts 0-9 OR have a strategy they know well to find the answers. Some strategies include repeated addition, using known facts, skip counting, or even drawing a picture.
Some ideas to better help your child practice their multiplication fact fluency are:
Flash Cards (can be bought or homemade)
Verbally practicing facts (when you are in the car, waiting in line, etc.)
Online games such as Prodigy or Freckle offer fact practice
Staff Highlight: Interventionist Team
District 15 offers math and reading intervention support (in both English and Spanish) for students who require additional support beyond classroom core instruction. Multiple data points are collected and reviewed in order to determine which students require intervention support.
Math Intervention
Students in math intervention are working on making 10, double digit addition and subtraction, and multiplication. Ask your child about the math games they are playing!
Cold Weather Guidelines and Snow Gear
Indoor recess is determined based on the following guidelines:
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is below 0°F, all students will remain inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is between 0°-10°F, the preferred procedure is a rotation of 20 minutes for lunch, a 20-minute outdoor recess, and a 20-minute indoor recess. However, at the principal's discretion, students may be kept inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is above 10°F, students will have regular outdoor recess.
PM Dismissal Updates
Sanborn’s official dismissal time is 3:05 p.m. (M-Th), and 2:15 p.m. on Fridays. Primary classrooms (ECDEC-2nd grade) begin to dismiss at 3:00 p.m. (M-Th) and at 2:10 p.m. (Fridays) in order to safely avoid the congestion in the front bus lane.
Grades 3-6 begin to dismiss at 3:05 p.m. (2:15 p.m.-Fridays). Parents/Guardians/PM Pickup Caregivers- if you are meeting your child in the front of the building, please walk closer to the building (Door 2 area) so that our staff can make visual contact with you before they release your child. If you are waiting in your car on Wood Street, please kindly exit the car and walk closer to the building (Door 2 area) so that our staff can see you. We also have a drive through loop in the back of the building (Door 8 off of Wood Street) if you would prefer to stay in your car and pick up your child. If our staff members cannot make visual contact with your child's pick-up person, your child will remain with our staff until you arrive. Thank you for your help with this as your child's safety is our number one priority.
Please call our school office (847-963-7000) if your child has an alternate dismissal plan as early in the day as possible. We understand that changes can happen quickly and we want to be able to communicate with your child's teacher as soon as possible. If you are sending an email to your child's teacher about an alternate dismissal plan, please copy our school secretary, Debbie Cox, in the email (coxd@ccsd15.net).
The church parking lot to the south of the school is not our parking lot. Please refrain from parking in this lot. If you have any questions, please reach out to Kate Arenberg.

FastBridge
All students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade take FastBridge assessments in the Fall, Winter, and Spring of each school year. FastBridge uses brief measures of early literacy and math at the Kindergarten and first grade levels. These brief assessments provide data on an early learner’s reading and math development. The FastBridge assessments typically take less than 10 minutes per student, but the data gained provides teachers with insights and suggestions to help address each child’s needs.
Fastbridge test results for students in kindergarten through second grade, from the fall and winter testing periods, will be available to parents via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. These results will be posted mid-February. When you log into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal you will need to select "more" from the dropdown window and then select "Assessments".
To learn more about each assessment and how to interpret your child's scores please visit our district website at https://www.ccsd15.net/Page/10414.
