Levelland ISD's
September 11th, 2023
Hello Levelland Lobos.
You all did an amazing job spreading Lobo spirit last week for Homecoming. It was a great week and an outstanding win for our Varsity Football team.
This week, we will be back to normal. By normal, I mean busy, which you all already know.
Twenty two years ago our great nation was under attack in the most horrific way. As we remember 9/11 and the almost 3,000 people who lost their lives, I think of the theme "Never Forget". Our nation will "Never Forget".
In 2011, President Obama said, "Even the smallest act of service, the simple act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim the spirit of unity that followed 9/11."
This week, I hope you "Never Forget" and find a way to honor our country and those we lost.
Go Lobos.

Around LISD......
National Read A Book Day!
Don't you love to curl up with a good book? Well, it's National Read A Book Day, and students all over the district were found reading everything from picture books to novels, to digital devices. As Dr. Seuss once wrote, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn." LISD educators know just how important reading is and how vocabulary exposure helps students learn more readily. What a great day to sit down and read!

More on Reading.......................
LMS 8th-grade students in Mrs. Lomeli-Guzman and Mrs. DeMerritt’s RLA Classes kicked off the week with discovering how friendships develop in the book Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. Students are learning how two 12-year-old boys from totally different backgrounds can overcome obstacles to develop the most unlikely friendship. There is Max who is “Mighty” because of his size and Kevin who is the “Freak” because he is freakishly smart and small. LMS students have been captivated by the story and are anxious to see how it will end. To help give our students a visual of the difference between Maxwel and Kevin we reached out to LMS Principal Mr. Eugenis and Luke Delacerda to help us recreate the cover. Wow, we should all read this book!
Duck, Duck.................Duck
Last week, Mrs. Voller's ABC littles were caught at Lobo Lake. They learned about ducks, their habitat, and how noisy they were!

Influencer
LHS students in Mrs. Katie Pena's Personal Finance Class enjoyed a guest speaker. Joe Dee Brooks is a born and raised Levelland businessman who believes in our school district and the opportunities it can create for our students. He discussed passions and opportunities with each class and told the students about his story of becoming a business owner in Levelland. Thank you Mr. Brooks, for the extra effort you made to connect and influence our kids! We appreciate you!
NEIDS Presentations
Do you know enough about illegal & synthetic drugs? LMS & LHS held NEIDS (Nurses Educating on Illegal Drugs and Synthetics) Assemblies for students. The UMC nurses started this informative program because they are seeing too many deaths from drugs. These presentations from UMC Nurses show the realities and consequences of synthetic & illegal drugs. We hope this made an impact on our LMS & LHS students. The Levelland Community is invited to attend the NEIDS presentation in the LMS auditorium on Wednesday, September 27th @ 5:30 pm. https://files.gabbart.com/455/live_steaming.mp4
8th Grade Job Fair!
LMS Counselors Mrs. Coats & Mrs. Bruce arranged for 8th Graders to attend the WorkForce Solutions Career Expo! Workforce Solutions had many career choice options on hand to visit with students about what route they might want to take when deciding what courses to take upon entering LHS & after. They all learned that some careers require college courses, & others don't! They learned that you can still be successful, even if you don't go to college but have some specialized training. A good time was had by all! There were challenges with our police too! Thank you, LMS, for helping your students unlock doors they can't even see yet. https://files.gabbart.com/455/jobfairvideo.mp4
17th Century Art
South Elementary students in Mrs. Mary Bara's Art classes were caught yesterday making pinprick pictures to support the Lobos! This art form is from the 17th and 18th centuries and is still a fun way to express yourself! Thanks for keeping it fun Mrs. Bara!
UIL Gearing Up
LHS UIL Coordinator Mr. Russell Hill shares that these students got up early the morning after Homecoming and traveled with 3 coaches to the UIL Student Activities Conference at The University of Texas Permian Basin on Saturday. They participated in sessions on One Act Play, Poetry and Prose competitions, and the Young Filmmakers competition. This session will help prepare these students for their competitions later this year. We are excited to see how far these kids move forward in UIL this year!
BBQ Team!
Are you hungry? LHS BBQ Team Chairs Mr. David Burton & Mrs. Khris Oaks were caught early this morning preparing & smoking chicken for the LHS Faculty. The LHS BBQ Team is practicing cooking for upcoming competitions. This project-based learning opportunity teaches students about meat judging, the science of cooking & wood seasoning, working through problems of heat & temperature to get the food just right, as well as learning focus, self-control, discipline, patience, & a few life lessons that will enable these students after high school.
