Maize Middle School
December 2022
A Message From Principal Mrs. Marney Hay
We are getting ready for the end of the semester. In this season of thanks, I want to thank you for all you do to support the students at Maize Middle School. I appreciate your participation in your child’s academic and extracurricular activities.
Over the next several weeks, your child will be discussing bullying and harassment as part of Second Step® Middle School. Bullying is at its peak in middle school, and research indicates that taking proactive steps to address bullying and harassment will help reduce occurrences of it in our school and will benefit students in high school and beyond. Second Step Middle School is designed to support your child in developing the knowledge and skills to help stop bullying and harassment. As a part of this program we are asking students to participate in a Second Step Bully Survey. Please follow this link to opt-in your child to participate in the survey. Here is a sample copy of the questions that will be on the survey Please complete the opt-in form by this Wednesday, December 7th. The school information included in this survey is for the Haysville school district but will be updated to reflect the Maize School district prior to students participating...

A Note From The Counselors
Second Semester Classes:
As your students return in January, their Eagles Landing, Math and ELA classes will remain the same while their semester classes will change. Please take time to review their upcoming schedule changes so they are ready for their new classes on January 5th. Due to how full our electives are, counselors are unable to maneuver classes/make changes at this time.
Freshman Enrollment: Save the Date
More information will be shared in January, but if you’d like to mark your calendars for the Parent/Guardian Freshman Enrollment Meeting, it will take place on Tuesday, January 31st from 6:30-7:30pm in the Maize High School auditorium. Maize High School counselors will also be visiting with all students during the school day around this time. Class selections will be made in early February.
Connecting during the Holidays:
Life can grow especially hectic during the holiday season. While exciting, the holidays can bring additional stress for many families including teens. This article has some suggestions on how to help teens manage stress during this time.
As we talk and engage with students, a theme we often hear is that they just want to talk and connect with their families--even if they don’t always act like it. Whatever your holiday traditions include, maybe consider taking time for simple, face-to-face connection with your family. This might include cooking together, playing a board game, taking a walk, or making cards for friends and family. It really doesn’t have to be extravagant--just spend time with each other. Kids and teens tend to open up more when they are engaging in simple, everyday activities.
If you’re looking for things to do in Wichita with your family, Wichita on the Cheap updates their website daily with a variety of activities for families.
We wish you all a happy holiday season!
If you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to the school counseling office.

Nurse Notes
Hello Maize Families!!
We have been very busy in the Health Office with a lot of fevers, emesis and sore throats! We have had a number of reported positive Influenza A diagnosis as well. Just a reminder that if your student is sick... PLEASE do not send them to school! It is not good for them, and it is not good for other students or teachers! Dr. notes are much appreciated!!
We continue to work on screenings for all 7th graders! Ask your student if he/she has been screened! If you have any questions about screenings, please call me!
On behalf of the Health Office, we would like to list a few things that we are in need of to better serve our students. If you feel so inclined, and would like to donate anything- we would appreciate it!!
1) Extra small, small, and medium girls NEW underwear
2) Girls leggings in all sizes
3) Maize gear that is in good shape... ALL sizes
4) Pre-packaged snacks, water bottles.
We wish you and your families a wonderful holiday season as we all prepare for Christmas!! As always, if we can help your student in any way- please do not hesitate to call!

Grade Checks
OTI Grade Checks
Weekly grade checks will continue for all student-athletes. If any student-athlete has an F when grade checks are conducted on Fridays, they will be given an "Opportunity to Improve" sheet that lists the class and teacher of the class(es) they are failing. Students will have the opportunity to stay eligible for the following week and work to get all their grades to passing. If on Friday the following week they are still failing a class, student-athletes will be ineligible for the following week and will not be allowed to participate in competitions for the week.
