We’re Going on Summer Break
This is the last Healthy Generations eNewsletter of the academic year! All of our newsletters go on hiatus over the summer. If you have events or announcements that you’d like us to share on social media, please email mch@umn.edu. We’ll resume our regular newsletter schedule at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year. –Nicollette Moore and Kaitlyn Traub were selected to share their project "Assessing Title V Capacity for Health Equity Work in Minnesota" during the L.I.F.E. for Rural and Underserved Communities: Sharing Strengths, Building Workforce Equity and Shaping Future Professionals Conference poster session on May 11, 2022.
–Alexis Chavez, Brianna Lundgren, and MacKenzie O’Kane were selected to attend this year’s Making Lifelong Connections Conference for MCHB trainees. This year's meeting topic was “Weaving Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism into an MCH Career” and two presented on: National MCH Trainee Blog: Lessons Learned and Future Directions (Alexis), and Expanding Model Practices in County Jails: Measuring longitudinal changes in trauma-informed attitudes of jail staff (MacKenzie).
–Delaine Anderson, who was recently awarded the UMN President’s Student Leadership and Service Award and who has been selected to provide the SPH’s Student Commencement speech. Read about Delaine’s work in APHA’s recent Highlights from The Nation's Health (April 2022).
–Dr. Ruby Nguyen, who was given the Horace T. Morse-University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education. Dr. Nguyen is the first tenured faculty member in the SPH to receive this award.

2. Student Spotlight: How Did Myo Myo Aye Support MPS in Data Analysis of the 2021-2022 Project and Develop a Vision Health Plan for the City of Minneapolis?
#UMNMCH student Myo Myo Aye (she/her) (MPH 2022) wrote this reflection on how her role as a Research Intern with the Minnesota Vision Health Task Force at Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) has contributed to her career in MCH. Her work creating briefs at MPS highlighted the importance of describing the impact of young children’s vision health. In this segment, Myo shares how the project is improving early detection of vision concerns and access to treatment for young children in Minneapolis.
Note that May is Healthy Vision Month! Help spread the word about steps families can take to protect their vision. Making sure everyone has access to quality eye care helps achieving health equity. #EyeHealthEducation #HealthyVisionMonth
3. National MCH Trainee Blog
Alexis Chavez and Alyssa Pochkar
Blog co-editors from the UMN Center for MCH, Alexis Chavez (MPH 2022), and from the University at Albany, Alyssa Pochkar (MPH 2022), are the authors of the newest blog posts featuring, Competency 5, Communication, Competency 7, Cultural Competency and Competency 10, Interdisciplinary/Interprofessional Team Building. For the last two years, Alexis and Alyssa have worked together to run our student-led National MCH Trainee Blog. Along with pursuing their MPH and running the blog, Alexis and Alyssa have had the opportunity to pursue other professional efforts that contribute to and strengthen their MCH leadership competencies. In their post, Alexis and Alyssa reflect on their MCH work as well as their opportunity to work together from two different schools to host and run our national blog. Cara Carter is a pediatric pharmacist in West Virginia also pursuing her second-year in the UMN’s MCH Program. Cara is the author of the recent blog post featuring Competency 10, Interdisciplinary/Interprofessional Team Building. She has a passion for patient advocacy and aspiration to work for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which is what inspired her to pursue her MPH. During her first year in MCH, she served as an intern at the Minnesota Perinatal Quality Collaborative (MNPQC). She shares, “While I learned about hypertension in pregnancy, including hypertensive urgency and hypertensive emergency, in both pharmacy school and residency, this was the first time I was able to apply this information in a preventative manner to public health at large versus the care of an individual patient.” Read more about Cara’s experience with her internship here!

Listen: The state of childbirth under a pandemic and uncertainty over reproductive health care | Dr. Rachel Hardeman is a featured guest on this MPR News episode discussing how the pandemic has shaped pregnancy and childbirth. They speak about the new research in racial health disparities, how racism contributes to poorer health, and how anticipated restrictions in abortion care could affect reproductive health outcomes.
Listen: ‘Birthing while Black’ is an American crisis. Communities demand justice | In this episode of “Color Code,” the Black maternal mortality crisis in the United States is discussed along with the experience of Denise Williams who died in August 2021 when she had recently given birth and needed treatment for acute postpartum depression. Hear from Williams' family, reproductive justice activists, and experts including Dr. Rachel Hardeman.

5. Registration is Open for the 2022 Adolescent Health Summer Institute-Promoting and Protecting Adolescent Mental Health
July 18, 2022 - July 20, 2022 | 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM CT
As we move beyond Covid, this is the opportune time to redefine effective strategies and best practices and change the mental health landscape. During the virtual 2022 Summer Institute, explore trends and patterns in adolescent mental health, examine intersectional and social-ecological lenses that affect mental well-being, and move past traditional notions of self-care. The 2022 institute will include a variety of synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences - live Zoom presentations with guest faculty and community experts, live small group activities, discussion boards, and a list of resources. It will be of interest to anyone who works with parents and young people. - teachers, counselors, physicians, social workers, dieticians, mentors, coaches, school nurses, public health nurses and nurse practitioners, health educators, psychologists, school district personnel, youth ministers, religious leaders, law enforcement, policy makers, and youth advocates. Register by July 11.
Note that May is National Adolescent Health Month (NAHM)! Join the Office of Population Affairs in celebrating young people’s strengths and potential, encouraging youth engagement, and highlighting key topics in adolescent health. Parents, caregivers, youth-serving professionals, and healthcare providers can empower youth to make decisions about their own health and become leaders in their communities. During NAHM, help adolescents build on their strengths, overcome barriers to accessing services and resources, and make healthy and informed decisions. #HealthyYouthNAHM
6. Save the Date: 2022 National Maternal Nutrition Intensive Course
August 1, 2022: In-Person Event | August 3, 2022: Virtual Webinar | September 1 - December 31, 2022: Fully Distance Program
This continuing education program focuses on the improvement of maternal and infant health through the delivery of risk-appropriate, high-quality nutrition services.
It is designed for dietitians, nutritionists, certified nurse midwives, registered nurses and nurse practitioners, physicians, and public health professionals who serve pre-conceptual, pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women. Registration details coming soon: z.umn.edu/mnic.

7. 2022 Community Connections Conference

The City of Minneapolis will host the Community Connections Conference–an annual free event that connects residents of Minneapolis, community groups, neighborhoods, and local government. This year's conference theme is "forward together," welcoming all communities to reconnect with the City and get involved in moving Minneapolis forward.

Join HRSA for the inaugural National Telehealth Conference. Experts and leaders in the field will examine the evolution of telehealth, discuss its place in an integrated health care delivery model, and review the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic to inform the future of telehealth.
9. Supporting Parents in their Recovery Journey

This virtual workshop will walk the audience through using five very practical “meeting guides” for commonly experienced situations. Each guide provides professionals with skills and strategies to navigate challenging situations and offer parents and caregivers very practical ways to support and enhance their recovery. 10. Understanding and Supporting LGBTQIA+ Students in Rural Communities and Small Towns
June 13, 2022 | 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM CDT
This presentation will highlight and discuss the unique experiences of rural LGBTQ+ youth. Utilizing a strengths perspective for both youth and rural communities, the presentation will provide participants with a holistic understanding of the experiences, needs, and realities of LGBTQ+ youth growing up outside urban areas. Attendees will explore practical guidelines and strategies for helping professionals, teachers, parents, and others to support LGBTQ+ youth and promote inclusive and safe rural communities. This webinar offers 3 CEHs and is designed for therapists, social workers, teachers, parents, and community agencies at the summer rate of $45.
11. Save the Date: 2022 Black Maternal Health Conference and Training Institute
September 17 - 18, 2022 | Renaissance Washington, D.C. Downtown Hotel
Registration is now open for the 2022 Black Maternal Health Conference and Training Institute™ (BMHC22) founded and led by The Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Inc. (BMMA). The conference is the premiere assembly for Black women, clinicians, professionals, advocates, and other stakeholders working to improve maternal health using the birth justice, reproductive justice, and human rights frameworks. This year’s conference will be hybrid (virtual and in-person) and will offer a national space for learning, rich discussions, and mobilization to transform Black Maternal Health, rights, and justice.
12. Permanency and Adoption Competency Certificate (PACC) 2022-2023 Cohort Registration Now Open
Hybrid metro-area and fully virtual cohort options starting Fall 2022. PACC invites interdisciplinary applicants with a current professional role impacted by permanency and adoption across an array of settings including public and tribal child welfare, mental health, education, or healthcare. The training schedule, pace, and assignments are designed for participants with full-time employment. The program offers over 70 Social Work CE hours, including the 2 hours of Ethics required in Minnesota.

Also observed in May: National Prevention Week (May 8-14), National Women's Health Week (May 8-14) and National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (May 19).
