The Weekly Roar
December 12, 2020
Our final Weekly Roar of 2020
Dear Families,
We are about to end the most unprecedented year of our lives. Never did we imagine what we were all capable of! We've done amazing things together for our students this year. So before I share the updates, I want to take a minute to send a HUGE thank you to our teachers, staff, office team, custodians, OCD team, STAR team, parents, grandparents, babysitters, neighbors, and last but not least, our students. Together, we've ensured that education remained a priority even during the hardest of times. To repeat, thank you, La Ballona Community for everything you've done in 2020. I'm putting on sunglasses for 2021, because it's going to be BRIGHT. And now for the updates:
Conferences
On December 14-15, we will continue having parent teacher conferences. Students are dismissed at 11:45 each day and there are no afternoon asynchronous lessons.
Report Cards
At your conference, your teacher will share your child's Report Card. Due to the pandemic, we are trying to go all electronic. You can access your child's Report Card through the Parent Portal. Directions on how to go to the Parent Portal and how to view the Report Card, click on the buttons below. Should you need help with the Parent Portal, please email joannamartinez@ccusd.org.
Dress Up Days
We are hoping for a joyful week during a fairly dark time this week. Check out the flyer below for dress up days to add cheer to our days. I hope to see some lovely sweaters, socks, hats, winter-wear, and pajamas throughout the week.
Dismissal Times
Look below for the Dismissal Time each day. Note: Wednesday and Thursday are the only days that follow our normal weekly schedule.
Need to Pick Up or Drop Something Off?
We know that during the holidays, many families like to drop off items for folks. Our Staff Lounge will be open Wednesday and Thursday, 10am-1pm. Also, there are still makerspace kits, pedometers, school pictures, Chromebooks, and teacher kits available to students. If you need help, please call the office.
Harp Show
This year, we have shifted our assembly times to family evening events. We've enjoyed Infinite Flow's Scoops of Inclusion and Music Technology. This Wednesday, get cozy next to your family and enjoy a beautiful Holiday Harp performance. Wednesday is Holiday Hat day, so let's see those hats on the Zoom screen!
With Respect and Gratitude,
Dr. Becky Godbey
Kids Heart Challenge
La Ballona Students are doing a remarkable job with the American Heart Association's Kids Heart Challenge. If you'd like to get involved in the action, please register your child by downloading the “Kids Heart Challenge” FREE App or visit our school’s homepage http://www2.heart.org/goto/laballona
All students that register win a free "no ascynchronous work" pass. If La Ballona beats last year's record ($3,000 raised for the AHA), Dr. Godbey will dye her hair PINK!
On Wednesday, December 16th, we will have our school-wide Follow-Up Assembly. The American Heart Association will lead a livestream assembly just for our La Ballona students on Wednesday, December 16th at 9:10am- 9:30 via Zoom! Parents, please help your child go to this Zoom Link on Wednesday at 9:10.

Dear 5th Grade Families
CAASPP
This may not be at the top of your mind, but I wanted you to know that the state does plan on administering a shortened version of the yearly CAASPP testing. At this time, we do not know what it will look like. All that we know is that it will be happening.
Walk Across America Challenge
La Ballona is making a comeback! We have the most registrants! Thanks to Coach Mendoza, Coach Angela, and Coach Gary for encouraging us to register! Please register so that we continue "walking across America!" Wouldn't it be nice to spend the Break in Colorado!
Need Equipment?
Everyone Belongs in our PTA!
We want all families to know that they are welcome to attend our PTA meetings and events! You do not have to be a member. The PTA is vital to our school. We provide field trips, school supplies, teacher grants, volunteer support, the garden, assemblies, family nights, and much much more. We appreciate everything our parents to to help La Ballona. We hope you participate in the following PTA/school community events:
